Books & Mortar: A Celebration of the Local Bookstore
Books & Mortar: A Celebration of the Local Bookstore | Gibbs Smith
2 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
A visual feast celebrating the alluring power of bookstores--68 paintings by illustrator Gibbs M. Smith. The local bookstore, a place of wonder, refuge, and rejuvenation for book lovers the world over. Books & Mortar is a celebration of these literary strongholds. Sixty-eight oil paintings capture these storefronts at a moment in time, and pair the artwork with anecdotes about the shops and reflections on bookselling by many of the owners themselves. A delightful gift for an avid reader, an inspiration for any bookstore owner, Books & Mortar is the perfect keepsake for anyone's personal library. Gibbs M. Smith, founder of his eponymous book publishing company, started the business in 1969 with his wife, Catherine, in Santa Barbara, California. After three years, they moved the company to Layton, Utah. Gibbs served as president, committed to the daily operations of the business for forty-eight years, until his death in 2017. This book is a celebration of Gibbs' legacy, the local bookstores that he loved, and fifty years of Gibbs Smith as an independent publisher.

Stopped by our favorite local bookstore - Wishing Tree Books- and got most of our Christmas shopping done. Yay! 😊 ✔ 🎁🎄

There was also the cutest little giving tree with book requests for kiddos from a local organization and we couldn't pass that up 🥰

ChaoticMissAdventures Love this! We are in lockdown, but places are allowed to do curbside pick up so I did a bunch earlier this week my local shop is called Annie Blooms, forgetting about small business saturday, so today I had to put in an order at my other local shop Powells! 3y
Hooked_on_books What a pretty shop! 😍 3y

Librariana @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks - I do as well! This has become my main local indie bookstore of choice. It's in a quaint little house and it's cozy and magical inside. Predominantly Children/Middle Grade books along with small sections of YA and Adult Lit. 3y
Librariana @ChaoticMissAdventures - Our city has had to re-establish restrictions and move from Phase 3 of 4 back down to Phase 2 due to our case count. A lot of businesses remain open and I know there's been a huge push to support and shop local which I'm trying to do every chance I get! 💜 3y
Librariana @ChaoticMissAdventures - Have to add that I've only been to Powells once and I absolutely LOVED it!! So blown away by it! 3y
Librariana @Hooked_on_books - It's absolutely dreamy inside, Holly! It's cozy and warm and FILLED with so many Children's books and toys. There's stuff for grown ups too, of course, although the selection is much smaller. If she doesn't carry what I'm looking for, I can always order from her online. Got all of our nieces' Christmas books there this past weekend! 🥰 3y
ChaoticMissAdventures @Librariana one of my favorite things to do in the before time was pop into Powell's and just listen to the tourists experience it for the first time 😍. The awe and wonder is so joyful. I am so glad you have been able to be there! 3y
Librariana @ChaoticMissAdventures - Oh, the before time... *sigh* 😔 Makes it sound so melancholic, but it's true. I have lovely memories of our brief visit to Portland. Hubby and I used to pick a new spot/city to take our wedding rings for inspection since the jewelry store where we purchased them doesn't have a location here in Spokane. I do miss our road trips, too! Aw, memories. Reminiscing is good for the soul, tho! 💙 3y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Librariana I wish we had one in our town!! 3y
Librariana @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks - I wish you did, too! We're pretty lucky to have an assortment of indie, used, and comic book stores in our area as well as 2 Barnes & Noble locations... about 10 or so stores in total! 😊 3y
