Lessons from a School Shooting Survivor
Lessons from a School Shooting Survivor: How to Find the Good in Others and Live a Life of Love and Peace | Missy Jenkins Smith
1 post | 2 to read
On December 1, 1997, three students were killed and five were injured in the Heath High School shooting in Paducah, Kentucky. It was one of the first mass school shootings in the string of dozens of school shootings in the U.S. the past two decades. The beacon of hope that day for the city, the nation and the world was Missy Jenkins Smith, who was paralyzed from the chest down. Missy immediately and courageously forgave the 14-year-old boy who shot her, making the conscious decision that his actions were not going to define who she would become. It is a hope that is shining brighter than ever today. Missy has followed her 2009 award-winning book "I Choose to be Happy" with this new book, "Lessons from a School Shooting Survivor: How to Find the Good in Others and Live a Life of Love and Peace." Crafted for a middle school and high school audience, and with classroom activities at the end of each chapter, "Lessons from a School Shooting Survivor" features fresh stories about Missy's life since the shooting as they relate to the principles of listening, empathy, forgiveness, laughter, optimism and kindness. In an attempt to reverse the incessant negativity that has blanketed our country the past couple of years, Missy encourages today's youth to create a narrative of their own lives and the lives they touch that is based on love and peace. The book has been endorsed by several educators nationwide, including C. Ed Massey, former National School Boards Association president; Tim Hanner, 2010 Kentucky Superintendent of the Year; Heather Martin, Columbine survivor, high school teacher, and co-founder of The Rebels Project; Phil Blaylock, 2017 National School Resource Officer of the Year; and Susan Guess, co-founder of the Guess Anti-Bullying Foundation. Missy has appeared on numerous television programs and in several publications, including Oprah, Good Morning America, Dateline, Montel, Ricki Lake, CNN Tonight, People, Glamour, and Ladies' Home Journal. She serves today as an inspirational speaker and as a day treatment counselor in a public school district. She is married with two children and lives on a farm in Murray, Ky.

DAY 30: Missy is not the type of person that wants #sympathy. She‘s much stronger than most. But the fact is 21 years ago tomorrow, she became paralyzed from the chest down after a classmate shot several students at our rural Kentucky high school. We were sophomores. Three girls died that day, 5 others injured. Tagging her first book in comments. 👇🏻

#nofemmeber

britt_brooke Missy also penned a memoir about that day and the time after. It‘s a very good, but very, very tough read. 6y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen and @Billypar Thank you for the fun and challenging prompts! I enjoyed it. 💚 6y

Billypar So sorry you were part of such a traumatic event. Even after hearing about each one, I can't even imagine what its like to witness. Your classmate sounds very brave to write books like these after all she suffered in the aftermath. Thanks for sharing this 💙 6y
Cinfhen 21 years ago and it‘s still so shocking and raw. I really want to read your classmate‘s books. What a strong and beautiful spirit she must be. As always, sending love your way 💚 6y
Cinfhen And thanks for joining ALL MONTH!!!! I really loved seeing your posts xx 6y
britt_brooke @Billypar Thank you for the kind words. ❤️❤️❤️ 6y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen Thanks for the love! ❤️❤️❤️ It‘s surprising how raw it is still is some days. It hangs in the back of my mind more often than I‘d like to admit. The anniversary is always difficult. It was a small school. We all knew everyone. Missy is truly inspiring. She‘s a social worker and public speaker now. I know she‘s helped a lot of people. ❤️ 6y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen I think this is the first challenge where I didn‘t miss a day! 😆🙌🏻 6y
Reviewsbylola ❤️❤️❤️ I imagine being a mother now doesn‘t make it any easier. It‘s a scary world we live in. I am stacking the book tagged above to start with. 6y
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola It‘s definitely different now that I‘m a mom. It both hurts and comforts my heart that my son goes through lock down drills at school; the classroom doors stay locked from the outside and there‘s full time police officer on school grounds. Yet ... none of that would‘ve prevented what happened at my school. That‘s the scariest part. No clear answers. Thanks for stacking Missy‘s book. 💚💚💚 6y
