Amsterdam Noir
Amsterdam Noir | Josh Pachter, René Appel

Amsterdam is a very welcome, if long overdue, installment in the European sector of the Akashic Noir Series. From the book's introduction by René Appel and Josh Pachter: Amsterdam has the amenities and, to a certain extent, the feel of a major world city, but one of its most attractive features is its relatively small size. It's easy to navigate on foot, by bike, and via its excellent public transportation network, especially with the semicircular perimeter of its famous grachtengordel, or ring of concentric canals. Like any other metropolis, though, Amsterdam also has its dark side, its shadowy corners - in other words, there is also an Amsterdam noir. No matter how beautiful, vital, and cheery a city might be, pure human emotions such as greed, jealousy, and the thirst for revenge will rear their ugly heads... with all the negative consequences thereto appertaining. Amsterdam is a multidimensional city, populated by a wide assortment of social groups, and not all of those groups agree on what constitutes normal social values and mores. This results in a lively mix... and, as you will see, in problems. Includes brand-new stories by: Michael Berg, Anneloes Timmerije, Murat Isik, René Appel, Josh Pachter, Simon De Waal, Hanna Bervoets, Karin Amatmoekrim, Christine Otten, Mensje van Keulen, Max van Olden, Theo Capel, Loes Den Hollander, Herman Koch, Abdelkader Benali, and Walter Van Den Berg.

#OminousOctober Day 22: Most likely one or two #Dead in tagged book. Still very much in a Netherlands state of mind. Fog will most likely be lifted once I travel again. 💕🌷

BarbaraBB I‘m happy to hear you had such a good time here. I can recommend more Dutch literature of course 😀 2y
GatheringBooks @BarbaraBB yes please! Would love to hear your recommendations! 2y
BarbaraBB I‘ll get back to you! 2y

BarbaraBB Here are some suggestions! There are a lot of Dutch books about colonialism and our interference in Indonesia. My family is Indonesian so this is a subject I read a lot about. It‘s no pretty story, the role of the Netherlands. The best book about it imo is 1y
BarbaraBB Another favorite subject among Dutch authors is WWII. A kind of classic is 1y
BarbaraBB The author mentioned above has written many books. My favorite is 1y
BarbaraBB A book about liberal Amsterdam in the 80s including lots of sex and drugs is 1y
BarbaraBB The one above has been translated under the same title. 1y
BarbaraBB This is a classic and might be my favorite. Reads like an English classic, set in the upperclass of The Hague in the 19th century. 1y
BarbaraBB Another favorite author, again about WWII, unfortunately another male but all his books are good 1y
BarbaraBB One of my favorite female writers is Connie Palmen 1y
BarbaraBB They won last year‘s International Booker but it‘s a very tough read 1y
GatheringBooks This is so awesome, @BarbaraBB !! Appreciate all the thought you put into this. I actually already have the discomfort of evening, and looking forward to reading it. Will try to find the others. 💕💕💕 1y

#IndelibleMoments Day 8: Our recent trip to Amsterdam just last week constitutes #ExoticTravel for me - the Netherlands has always been such a faraway, almost-unreachable place for me (for reasons other than geography) and I feel privileged to finally spend an entire week there. Here‘s my book haul from our trip.

BarbaraBB Max Havelaar was an obliged read at school and I loved Mokusei but the others I haven‘t even heard of! Enjoy! 2y
Tonton Wonderfully cool stack🌟â£ï¸ 2y
GatheringBooks @BarbaraBB is the max havelaar a good read though? Seems perfect for our #DecolonizeBookshelves2022 reading theme when I read the back blurb. 2y

GatheringBooks @Tonton thank youuuu! Did a fair bit of book hunting while in amsterdam and the hague! 🌷 2y
BarbaraBB It‘s definitely about the Dutch colonization of Indonesia. It‘s just a bit too long if you ask me. I prefer this book about the subject 2y
Eggs How fun! 2y

As a reader raised on Nancy Drew, whose mother read a lot of crime books of one sub genre or another, it‘s no surprise that probably 3/4 of my bookshelves are filled with books detailing #murder. Pictured is my #akashicnoir collection.

Finished this book last night and enjoyed it. I‘ve read a number of the Akashic Noir series and love this way to find new authors. The Amsterdam book featured a wide variety of short stories - some darker than others- but all good.
