I read the first in this volume, Laura by Vera Caspary, after viewing the 1944 film by the same name. It was fascinating to read the book knowing the twist. I think because the book is from multiple perspectives, including the killer‘s, it added to the overall experience of the characterization and kept me riveted. Both the novel and the film get a thumbs up! #screenadaptation #filmnoir

Six better than last week. This list is killing me! 🤣 For my 3 faves, I went to book noir: two Hammetts and one Chandler.
1. THE MALTESE FALCON: “And when you're slapped you'll take it and like it.”
2. THE BIG SLEEP: “You were dead, you were sleeping the big sleep, and you were not bothered by things like that.“
3. THE THIN MAN: “Nora: “How do you feel?“
Nick: “Terrible. I must've gone to bed sober.”

ChaoticMissAdventures I have a canvas print of Maltese Falcon I loved the vibe of the book! 1w
dabbe @ChaoticMissAdventures How cool is that? You need to post a pic! I loved the book and movie so much that I taught an American film noir unit to my juniors as a reward at the end of the year. They loved it! To have them come into the room before class started and voluntarily talk about what they thought was going to happen next was priceless! 😍 1w

Waldo‘s narrative is intriguing, often full of vibrant vocabulary. “Scrofulous,” suitable for #weirdwordwednesday , means having a diseased appearance, and similarly “rachitic” refers to rickety geraniums. Interesting word choice. Revealing much?….

Reggie Um excuse me. You think you can just pop in with a weird word Wednesday like we haven‘t see you for months! lol, good to see you, Peter! lol 2w
psalva @Reggie Haha I was trying to be sneaky… it‘s certainly been a minute. 2w

The Postman Always Rings Twice, by James M. Cain (1934)

Premise: A drifter arrives at a California service station, setting off a dark chain of events.

Review: This classic is noir fiction at its absolute best: atmospheric, hard-boiled, and no-holds-barred
Cont.

Mattsbookaday Read this if you enjoy crime fiction and gritty story-telling, but if you need likable or relatable characters you‘d probably be best to skip it. Content warnings for conspiracy, violence, and anti-Mediterranean-origin prejudice.

Bookish Pair: For another classic piece of noir literature, Dashiell Hammett‘s The Maltese Falcon (1930).

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

In this atmospheric noir novel set in Mexico in the 1970s, Maite is a dissatisfied secretary who livens up her life with romance comics, lies, and the occasional petty theft, while Elvis is a member of the Hawks, hired thugs trained to violently disrupt student protests. As they both become embroiled in the search for a missing young woman, Maite and Elvis each seek escape through music and glimpses of beauty in a tedious and often violent world.

#DynamicDs #Detective #OldSchool The tagged book is a collection of stories , The Maltese Falcon brought us Sam Spade , The Big Sleep , Phillip Marlowe .
Humphrey Bogart played both of those roles , & as you can see from the cover , Robert Mitchum played Marlowe in a remake . Good stuff !

Eggs Excellent stuff 👏🏻 2mo

Classic noir novel about a drifter who falls in love with the wife of a restaurant owner, and they plot to murder him. Fast-paced, choppy sentences, quick read. There is definitely some sexism & racism mixed in here that speaks to its 1930s publication. Glad to read the well-known story though, and it definitely kept me turning the pages. I wish I could have seen a bit of depth in the character of Cora. We see her only through the drifter‘s eyes.
