4 posts | 10 read | 5 to read
A killer is on the loose, and only one girl has the power to find him. But in this genre-bending YA thriller, she must first manage to avoid becoming a target herself. For Adele, the dead arent really dead. She can see them and even talk to them. But shes spent years denying her gift. When she encounters her ex best friend Tori in a shallow grave in the woods and realizes that Tori is actually dead -- that gift turns into a curse. Without an alibi, Adele becomes the prime suspect in Toris murder. She must work with Toris ghost to find the real killer. But what if the killer finds Adele first? In The Lonely Dead, master mystery writer April Henry adds a chilling paranormal twist to this incredibly suspenseful young adult novel. A Christy Ottaviano Book

Pickpick

I‘m torn on this one. I have read a few April Henry books, but they‘re not generally my preferred genre. I was sucked into this one by the ghost aspect and read it in one sitting. The paranormal spin is what I enjoyed. However, I was bothered by the police interrogations of a teenager without guardian contact and unsure about some mental health aspects. Reading other reviews made me question those more, making it a less strong pick.

Not one of her better ones. I didn‘t like the messages sent about mental health....felt they were actually dangerous. Also, the teen suspect was questioned multiple times about a murder with no representative present. Nope.

Everything about this book was just so simplistic, it wasn't mysterious at all and the reveal was obvious and let me down. I think mental illness and taking medications for it were handled very poorly. Not recommended!

Nebklvr Exactly! I liked some of her others but this was not good. 4y

Unfortunately, I read this. I'm sorry to say this so bluntly, but this sucked. It read like an early-middle grade and not YA. The writing is lazy, and the characters are dull and undeveloped. The story was not fleshed out well, and the characters' reactions were absolutely unrealistic. It was very simple which is disappointing because it had so much potential. I only kept reading because the story was about ghosts.
