Good Mourning
Good Mourning | Elizabeth Meyer
3 posts | 8 read | 5 to read
In this funny, insightful memoir, a young socialite risks social suicide when she takes a job at a legendary funeral chapel on New York City’s Upper East Side. Good Mourning offers a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most famous funeral homes in the country—where not even big money can protect you from the universal experience of grieving. It’s Gossip Girl meets Six Feet Under, told from the unique perspective of a fashionista turned funeral planner. Elizabeth Meyer stumbled upon a career in the midst of planning her own father’s funeral, which she turned into an upbeat party with Rolling Stones music, thousands of dollars worth of her mother’s favorite flowers, and a personalized eulogy. Starting out as a receptionist, Meyer quickly found she had a knack for helping people cope with their grief, as well as creating fitting send-offs for some of the city’s most high-powered residents. Meyer has seen it all: two women who found out their deceased husband (yes, singular) was living a double life, a famous corpse with a missing brain, and funerals that cost more than most weddings. By turns illuminating, emotional, and darkly humorous, Good Mourning is a lesson in how the human heart grieves and grows—whether you’re wearing this season’s couture or drug-store flip-flops.

Mehso-so

Because this book deals with the death industry (come one I'm a hospice nurse, what do you expect?) and was kind of gossipy it is saved from a total pan. What makes me want to pan it? The whole premise of the book is rich girl gets job coordinating funerals for the rich and famous. She then name/brand drops at least every paragraph. Yea I get it, you're rich, I don't need to know you wore your Gucci heels while drinking a dean and deluca latte

mrsthilkey Being Mortal deals with death and is an excellent read, that is if you haven't read it yet! 7y
SarahK @mrsthilkey I love being mortal and think it should be required reading for everyone! 7y
LivinginaLibrary I felt the same way! I completely understood why her coworkers weren't particularly welcoming - especially when she was equating the pay with volunteering when they were living off the same pay! 7y

SarahK @LivinginaLibrary where tony tells her that the salary is only $35,000 and she says something like, oh that's just a trip to Europe and a purse. 🙄. I think the therapist told her something similar that maybe her coworkers would be more friendly if she weren't flaunting her wealth all the time. 7y
LivinginaLibrary I forgot about that comment! I was so disappointed with this book because I really wanted to love it but ended up being really annoyed. She says something about being shocked that people were actually worrying about money when planning a funeral and I wanted to reach in the book and smack her! Most of us don't have unlimited budgets! 7y
mrsthilkey @SarahK Yes, it should be required reading for sure. 7y

Pickpick

For a book about death, this is light, fluffy and a fast read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
