Twenty Years After (the Three Musketeers D?artagnan Series Volume 2)
Twenty Years After (the Three Musketeers D?artagnan Series Volume 2) | Alexandre Dumas

Cardinal, a man was sitting in deep reverie, his head supported on his hands, leaning over a gilt and inlaid table which was covered with letters and papers. Behind this figure glowed a vast fireplace alive with leaping flames; great logs of oak blazed and crackled on the polished brass andirons whose flicker shone upon the superb habiliments of the lonely tenant of the room, which was illumined grandly by twin candelabra rich with wax-lights. Any one who happened at that moment to contemplate that red simar--the gorgeous robe of office--and the rich lace, or who gazed on that pale brow, bent in anxious meditation, might, in the solitude of that apartment, combined with the silence of the ante-chambers and the measured paces of the guards upon the landing-place, have fancied that the shade of Cardinal Richelieu lingered still in his accustomed haunt. It was, alas! the ghost of former greatness. France enfeebled, the authority of her sovereign contemned, her nobles returning to their former turbulence and insolence, her enemies within her frontiers--all proved the great Richelieu no longer in existence. In truth, that the red simar which occupied the wonted place was his no longer, was still more strikingly obvious from the isolation which seemed, as we have observed, more appropriate to a phantom than a living creature--from the corridors deserted by courtiers, and courts crowded with guards--from that spirit of bitter ridicule, which, arising from the streets below, penetrated through the very casements of the room, which resounded with the murmurs of a whole city leagued against the minister; as well as from the distant and incessant sounds of guns firing--let off, happily, without other end or aim, except to show to the guards, the Swiss troops and the military who surrounded the Palais Royal, that the people were possessed of arms. The shade of Richelieu was Mazarin. Now Mazarin was alone and defenceless, as he well knew.

I‘m finally done with this #YearOfDumas reread (thank you 2020). Not a fan of the audiobook narrator, but I enjoyed this continuation of the adventures of the four musketeers. Twenty years have scattered our heroes and divided them politically, but we get more swashbuckling adventures, a new cardinal, and a deadly new enemy! Wordy, as is most popular 19th C French literature, but I‘m a fan. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is a combination #weeklyforecast for the first week of March and my proposed #MarchTBR. I hope to reach page 168 in the tagged book for my #YearofDumas, listen to the third book in the Milo Weaver series, and at least start my #NetGalley ARC of the latest Milo Weaver book. Time permitting, I‘d also like to dive into my personal TBR challenge, with March‘s theme of spy novels. The list has just a few from my shelves. 🤓

Cinfhen What a clever idea 💡 giving your month a theme 🤓Solid plan/ best of luck ☘️💚😘 5y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Another fun adventure. It was fun to see how relationships played out in this novel as opposed to the last one. My only real complaint is that there are too many historical figures and events to keep track of and it doesn't help that Dumas butchers them to make his characters more glorious. 😜

Was making some progress in this when I found out it's Alexandre Dumas's birthday!! He was born today in 1802.

Gezemice Nice! Love me some Dumas. Happy 215th. 🤔😊 7y

It's interesting to see that Dumas's "good" characters defend the tyranny of Charles I. I definitely was never given a sympathetic view of him in any of my history classes.

Gezemice Yeah but it is one thing not to like someone and another to cut his head off. Especially if he is a king which was kind of a semi-godly state at the time. 7y
Lylah @Gezemice I know both sides, I had to do debates a few times for it; it's definitely hard to imagine caring that much for a monarch who's doing the country some wrong from a modern viewpoint though! They defend him pretty vigorously. 7y
Gezemice @Lylah I read this a long time ago and don't remember that - I should re-read! 7y
Lylah @Gezemice definitely worth a reread! ☺️ 7y

My TBR is very light on classics but I found these. Recently re-read Musketeers and want to read the other two. #ClassicsTBR #junebookbugs

Haven't finished a book in almost a month because I've been getting ready to move and I'm only halfway through this doorstopper.

Louise I just finished my first Dumas novel. It was fantastic! 8y
Lylah @Louise this is my second (second in the Three Musketeers series) and I love his writing! I plan on reading that one too! 8y

I found this beautiful book at Half Price Books for 5 dollars. It was published in the 1890s and despite smelling a bit je ne sais pas it's in wonderful condition for s gift to my mother and her love of all things Dumas!
