The Count of Monte Cristo
The Count of Monte Cristo | Alexander Dumas
The Count of Monte Cristo is an adventure novel by French author Alexandre Dumas. It is one of the author's most popular works, along with The Three Musketeers. Like many of his novels, it is expanded from plot outlines suggested by his collaborating ghostwriter Auguste Maquet. The story takes place in France, Italy and islands in the Mediterranean during the historical events of 1815-1838. It begins from just before the Hundred Days period (when Napoleon returned to power after his exile) and spans through to the reign of Louis-Philippe of France. The historical setting is a fundamental element of the book. An adventure story primarily concerned with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy and forgiveness, it focuses on a man who is wrongfully imprisoned, escapes from jail, acquires a fortune and sets about getting revenge on those responsible for his imprisonment. However, his plans have devastating consequences for the innocent as well as the guilty. In addition, it is a story that involves romance, loyalty, betrayal and selfishness, shown throughout the story as characters slowly reveal their true inner nature. The book is considered a literary classic today. According to Luc Sante, "The Count of Monte Cristo has become a fixture of Western civilization's literature, as inescapable and immediately identifiable as Mickey Mouse, Noah's flood, and the story of Little Red Riding Hood.

It is amazing how one can read a book of 1105 pages and still feel melancholy that there is no more left to read. Dumas does well to state “Fac et spera“ in his closing sentence, but that is best understood when weighed in the balance with Ecclesiastes.

Dumas is a definite favorite. I have never been disappointed with his work.

I truly enjoyed my time with the Count of Monte Cristo/Edmond Dantes. I anxiously awaited the famous prison break, which was everything I hoped for. There are so many characters, at times it felt like I was reading several different stories. The book pretty much covers Dantes‘ entire life, yet at the end I wanted there to be more. I liked the ending, and yet, I feel like there is more story to be told.

Hello all… Sorry I‘m running so late with my reads from March. I did not complete any of my #Roll100 for March, but I added them to my April lineup. I completed my #DoubleBookSpin for #BookSpinBingo & my #BookSpin will be read in April as well. I know it wasn‘t the best month for reading because I got sick with pneumonia, but I felt like I did OK overall. I also had a little Ruby Dixon marathon, which was fun.

The Count of Monte Cristo is the story of betrayal, love, and redemption. The story follows Edmund Dantes through imprisonment, freedom, and revenge spanning nearly his entire life. After meeting Abbe Faria, the priest, while imprisoned, Dantes learns the location of the treasure of Monte Cristo.

You‘d think since it took me 4+ months to read, this wasn‘t one I was too keen on but I really enjoyed it. I found the audio needed a lot of concentration, though so it wasn‘t what I turned on most days. I wish I had made a point to go for a walk for an hour every days to stay focused on it but maybe next time!

Thank you to @AllDebooks for motivating me to finally pick this up!

I know this is going to sound weird, but Edmond Dantes reminds me a lot of the Cat in the Hat, balancing stuff and saying "but that is not ALL I can do!"; mixed with Friar Lawrence from Romeo and Juliet and that man your parents warned you about that was going to give you drugs for free; all sprinkled with the biggest flair for drama that you can imagine...and honestly, if that doesn't sell this book to you I don't know what more do you want

ravenlee Whar a great review! It totally makes me want to read it…but I think it might be a once-in-a-lifetime read, rather than a reread. 11mo
nanuska_153 @ravenlee thanks! Yeah although I liked the book, I'd be surprised if I revisited it to be honest. I know it's a favourite of many people so you never know 11mo
catsuit_mango I did a reread nos so long ago (must have read an abriged version as a kid), and I kept wondering why there is no recent movie adaptation, it has every kind of adventures :) 11mo
See All 7 Comments
nanuska_153 @catsuit_mango yes, it really has it all adventure-wise. Prison break, lost treasure, kidnapping, murders... There's very little that doesn't happen. I'd be interested on who would be casted as Maximilien Morrell and Albert de Morcef, because they were pure🔥🔥 in my imagination 😅 11mo
ravenlee @catsuit_mango there was an adaptation around 2000, and it‘s a good movie if almost nothing like the book. It would need to be done as a series to do it justice, and even then…there‘s a lot… 11mo
nanuska_153 @ravenlee @catsuit_mango we need one of those BBC mini series... with Colin Firth coming out of a lake ❤️😌 11mo
catsuit_mango There seems to be a french movie adaptation in the works but the Guy casted for Edmund is just too bland for me, he will be OK at the beginning but not as the Count 11mo

A plot of revenge, and a little bit more. This is truly a wonderful classic that, while wordy and descriptive, is touching. How someone who has been wronged can fight for the rights of others and yet also find peace from their past. It‘s a wonderful book of coming to tranquility and acceptance of life‘s challenges and finding joy through difficulties.

It is a great story worth perseverance as to its length. I enjoyed this more the first time I read it. As a more experienced reader, I can see it would safely withstand a heavy edit.

ravenlee This is one that clearly shows its roots as a serial. I was impressed how Dumas tied all the (many, many) threads together, but it‘s pretty obvious he was milking the story for all it was worth—and then some. 13mo

Fan-freaking-tastic!! The quintessential action/adventure novel. Reminds me of the grandfather‘s pitch for the book The Princess Bride, “Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, chases, escapes, true love, miracles.” It has everything and keeps you on the edge of your seat. It‘s far-ranging in scope and has a vast array of characters, but everything dovetails beautifully at the end.

DGRachel Dumas is one of my favorite authors. 💖 14mo

Super Chunkster complete!! 🎉

I can see why this classic is so well-loved: it‘s fascinating, engaging, and meticulously planned out. To be honest, I don‘t think I liked any of the characters, but it was so satisfying to see all the threads come together in the end. For so many characters, there was a much harsher fate than I expected (of course—book vs. movie!), and a stronger, more nuanced meditation on revenge. #ChunksterChallenge2023
