“I have nothing but a cat which I bought for a penny some time since from a little girl“
“I have nothing but a cat which I bought for a penny some time since from a little girl“
This story teaches the lesson that hard work pays off, with determination and perseverance, I would use this book as a fun way to motivate students to work hard
This book was about a man named Dick Whittington and his smart cat who are going to search to become rich, the cat is very got at catching rats which helps them in their quest
#JulyJam Day 10: #KittenDay reminded me of this picturebook shared with me by a librarian friend from her massive book collection.
“But even when he was named Sir Richard Whittington, he did not forget what it was like to be poor and friendless. He gave London its first fountain of clean drinking water. He added a wing to a hospital for homeless young mothers, and he built comfortable shelters for old people.”
This book would be good to read to students when talking about the importance of working hard, treating everyone equally and being kind to one another. One small act of kindness can completely change someone‘s life.
Genre: Traditional Literature
I loved the theme behind this book and how the story unfolds. I thought it was cool how at the beginning of the book, Dick was one of the poorest, hungriest people around; however, by the end of the book, Dick‘s perseverance and braveness turned into him becoming the mayor of London and being one of the richest people around.
“He added a wing to a hospital for homeless young mothers, and he built comfortable shelters for old people.”

Dick Whittington and His Cat retold by Margaret Hodges
Holiday House 2006
This story has a theme of the underdog winning and coming to light which children love. Everything works out for him in the end when it didn‘t seem so great in the beginning
“all the people cheered and all the church bells were ringing”
published 2006. In this story the author uses very good descriptive language. This authors words really help the reader visualize the scene being read is the reader was to close their eyes. I also really like the the illustrations. The facial expression on the characters are astonishing.
