The Orchardist's Daughter
The Orchardist's Daughter | Karen Viggers
4 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
Sixteen-year-old Mikaela has grown up isolated and homeschooled on an apple orchard in southeastern Tasmania, until an unexpected event shatters her family. Eighteen months later, she and her older brother Kurt are running a small business in a timber town. Miki longs to make connections and spend more time in her beloved forest, but she is kept a virtual prisoner by Kurt, who leads a secret life of his own. When Miki meets Leon, another outsider, things slowly begin to change. But the power to stand up for yourself must come from within. And Miki has to fight to uncover the truth of her past and discover her strength and spirit. Set in the old-growth eucalypt forests and vast rugged mountains of southern Tasmania, The Orchardist's Daughter is an uplifting story about friendship, resilience and finding the courage to break free.

Just happened upon this book in the library. An Aussie author I had not heard of. Beautiful story about Tasmania with real Aussie characters, mentions of classic literature , footy matches, and much more. Plus a satisfying ending. Off to the library to get another one of her books. Great story teller.

Just started this, another title set in southern Tasmania. Saw the author speak (virtually) at last week‘s Yarra Valley Writer‘s Festival.

Mehso-so

I broke two of my rules (no books where the title mentions wife, daughter or girl and no books whose covers feature women in frocks from the back). I broke them because I want to read more by local authors.

The setting, rural southern Tasmania, was the best part of this book. The characters are cliched and the twists well telegraphed and everything is explained. A lot.

It finally feels like autumn, so I‘m swatching for a new jumper and reading Canberra author, Karen Viggers‘ latest book #readlocal #localauthorshowcase
