Gorgeous writing. A heartbreaking story.

Class warfare, automatons, gargoyles, mechanization, ghosts, alchemy, a soul-smoker, and questions about the very nature of humanity: this book has a lot going on.

The main storyline of this delightfully inventive book is told from the point-of-view of an emancipated automaton, Mattie. Though her heart is a thing of metal and clockwork, and she is said to have no soul, she is amazingly easy to identify with.

Overall, a really great read.
