Bodega Dreams
Bodega Dreams | Ernesto B. Quinonez
7 posts | 10 read | 3 to read
In a stunning narrative combining the gritty rhythms of Junot Diaz with the noir genius of Walter Mosley, Bodega Dreams pulls us into Spanish Harlem, where the word is out: Willie Bodega is king. Need college tuition for your daughter? Start-up funds for your fruit stand? Bodega can help. He gives everyone a leg up, in exchange only for loyaltyand a steady income from the drugs he pushes. Lyrical, inspired, and darkly funny, this powerful debut novel brilliantly evokes the trial of Chino, a smart, promising young man to whom Bodega turns for a favor. Chino is drawn to Bodega's street-smart idealism, but soon finds himself over his head, navigating an underworld of switchblade tempers, turncoat morality, and murder.

Book #1 of 2025: “Bodega Dreams” by Ernesto Quiñonez

Set in Spanish Harlem, this novel centers on a fictional radical named Willy Bodega and his plans to improve the quality of life for his fellow Puerto Ricans. It‘s told from the perspective of a young man in the neighborhood who gets caught up in Bodega‘s work. It‘s a fast read and I enjoyed it.

I recently started volunteering for the non-profit organization, Brooklyn Book Bodega. The mission of BBB is to increase the number of 100+ book homes for kids 0-18 in NYC. I had the pleasure of volunteering at their event last week!

From 11/15-11/22, a portion of each sale on barnesandnoble.com using the special voucher code #12562567 goes to Brooklyn Book Bodega. Enter the code where it says "Apply Bookfair ID" at checkout.

I really enjoyed this book. Always have been curious about Spanish Harlem. It gave me a flavor for the place between 2 time periods...late 60s/early70s and late 80s/early 90s. Interesting read. I enjoyed his analogies. My niece sent me this book bc it‘s part of her HS Teaching curriculum in Queens.

I love the title of this novel. Have always meant to read it. I think I read his second novel. PS some one has added two DVD sets to the free book shelf in the laundry room.😖
