250 years after Cook's voyage to the South Pacific, the dazzling and diverse art of Oceania, from the historic to the contemporaryFrom the remote shores of Rapa Nui to the dense rainforest of Papua New Guinea, the islands of the Pacific are home to some of the most culturally diverse populations on the planet. The region embraces an extraordinary range of art forms, from delicate shell ornaments to spectacularly decorated canoes and meeting houses. These have fascinated outsiders since the exploratory voyages of Captain Cook, the first of which commenced 250 years ago in 1768, and they went on to entrance Gauguin and a host of other European artists. This volume accompanies a major survey in London and Paris of art from Oceania. It brings together the most up-to-date scholarship by the leading experts in the field, encompassing a dazzling array of objects from the region, including many that have never been published before. Also included are many works that have historically been overlooked, such as painted and woven textiles, elaborate wicker assemblages and expressively sculpted vessels, alongside works by artists working in Oceania today. Objects of great aesthetic beauty, these artworks are the product of a complex web of social, mythological and historical influences.

I did a better search tonight for books for the #readingOceania challenge, especially for audiobooks, which really help me knock out lots of books. So here‘s part 1 of my anticipated reads for the challenge this year. @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

BarbaraBB I am surprised there are so many choices! 11mo
Librarybelle Hooray! 11mo
Larkken In case you are still looking for possibilities from the Marianas Islands, the tagged is by a poet/activist from Guam and is nonfiction. I‘ve not read it so would be interested to hear what you thought of it! 11mo

marleed I discovered Libby while I was living in SA because the library did such a great job encouraging people to try their e-lib. It opened up doors to many more options to experience books! I lived less than a mile from the fascinating Central Library but it was the e-library I was most grateful for. Funny thing is, I purchase more physical books because audiobooks allow me to experience so many more authors and genres! 11mo
Texreader @marleed I discovered Libby late last year during jury duty!! 😊 and I work about two blocks from the central library but never go. I keep telling myself it would be good to go walk there but I don‘t. I think it‘s been closed for construction too. 11mo
Texreader @Larkken Thank you!!! 11mo
Texreader @BarbaraBB Right? 11mo
marleed @Texreader omg - I was called for jury duty about 3 months into living in SA and I walked down from my Pearl apt to the courthouse (because I could). The ordeal was fascinating since hundreds of potential jurors for many cases gathered. Coolest thing though, as the morning kicked off this older man (bailiff I suppose) welcomed everyone and explained how proud he was of us for showing up for our civic duty. He made me proud to be there. 11mo
Texreader @marleed I served on a jury many years ago here in SA. I got lucky this time. But I think it‘s a great public service. And as a litigator it was fascinating to be on that side of it. 11mo
