Middlewest #1
Middlewest #1 | Skottie Young
10 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
The lands between the coasts are vast, slow to change, and full of hidden magics. Mistakes have been made, and in this NEW ONGOING SERIES, an unwitting adventurer searches for answers to quell a coming storm that knows his name. From author SKOTTIE YOUNG (I HATE FAIRYLAND, Deadpool) and artist JORGE CORONA (NO. 1 WITH A BULLET, Feathers, Big Trouble in Little China: Old Man Jack) comes the tale of Abel, a young boy who must navigate an old land in order to reconcile his family's history.

Even if C2E2 isn‘t ALL about comics, it‘s MOSTLY about comics & this morning was epic. First stop was Skottie Young‘s table—as always—where we chatted about family & comics. Then it was on to meet Jorge Corona & Morgan Beem, artists for two of my favorite Skottie Young comics, Middlewest & Untold Tales of I Hate Fairyland. Came home with original art from the first issue of Middlewest & an Untold Tale. So excited to add these to my collection!

Well that was interesting, a boy runs away from home and a storm that knows his name and his life keeps getting complicated. Artwork reminds me a lot of European comics and makes me want to return soon.

I can‘t think of the right words to describe this graphic novel. Dark. Bizarre. Sad. FUNNY. Very symbolic of how our anger and rage can destroy others around us. I am anxious to read the next book and see where the story is headed.

(Oh, and I thought Suki was a good prop.)

Excited to see @ElishaLovesBooks & her co-teacher prepping to teach Middlewest in class next week. Students are going to read & journal about it at one of their stations. Why use comics in class? Besides the obvious—it‘s cool (true but perhaps not important) & many kids love them (perhaps more important)—there‘s a lot to talk about in stories told with words & pictures (as in any story)—narrative structure, theme, inferencing, & more. So cool!

It‘s no secret I love this comic & I‘m not the only one—the first issue went to a fourth printing! As of today, I now have all four! I love the story & Skottie Young‘s writing is fantastic (of course). Put it all together with the art & especially the colors, & it‘s just hard to look away. Sometimes a thing just clicks with your brain & honestly, I could stare at these covers all day.
