What to Do about Alice? | Barbara Kerley
35 posts | 15 read | 1 to read
A witty and stylish biography of a maverick American heroine -- the outspoken, irresistible daughter of Teddy Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt had a small problem. Her name was Alice. Alice Lee Roosevelt was hungry to go places, meet people, do things! Father called it running riot. Alice called it eating up the world. Whether she was entertaining important White House visitors with her pet snake or traveling the globe, Alice bucked convention and turned every new experience into an adventure! Brimming with affection and wit, this spirited biography gives readers a peek at family life inside the White House. Prose and pictures spring, gambol, and two-step across the pages to celebrate a maverick American heroine.

“Father called it “Running riot.”
Alice called it “eating up the world.””
This is quote is in the preface and within the book, for good reason! What one calls riot another calls eating the world up. I think more people should be eating the world up rather than worrying about causing a riot. I think everyone could learn from Alice, and live life to the fullest!

I loved this book! It reminded my of Alice in Wonderland, the way she was not like anyone else and went on her own path and not the path made for her. Alice seems so fun and full of life! I also thought it was funny that she drove her father crazy!

This book about the “wild child” in the white house. Alice, Theodore Roosevelt‘s daughter and how she “ate up the world.” She wanted the most out of life and gave her father a run for his money. She was magnificent from what I can see! She always pushing her fathers buttons and boundaries.
This book won the Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award!

I would use this book in my classroom because it teaches gender roles and bias but it shows Alice's perseverance through it all and will be a good lesson for young children to understand and develop their own beliefs.

What to Do about Alice? written by Barbara Kerley. About President Theodore Roosevelt's daughter, Alice who is very independent and unique. With the format of the book, the words move with the illustrations on the page. Some pages had a lot of space between the lines of words. Author's note at the end provides factual evidence.

“But there was one problem that Theodore Roosevelt never quite solved... What to do about Alice?” I love that the book ended with this even though in the end everyone had a happy ending!

This book reminds me of myself in a way! I feel like I too am sometimes not understood for the way I do things in life but it usually works out in the end like it did for Alice! Great book to show kids because it expresses the value of differences

Published in 2008- this story is about Theodore Roosevelt‘s daughter Alice who seemed to have a mind of her own! She did not enjoy listening to people when they told her what she should be doing with her life. It is truly a book about female empowerment and not allowing people to tell you how life should be lived in such an entertaining way! Illustrations added even more excitement to the story with their bright colors and vivid pictures!

What To Do About Alice? by Barbara Kerley and illustrated by Edwin Fotheringham, 2008. This book tells the wonderful story of Teddy Roosevelt‘s daughter Alice, who was wild and eccentric and became one of her fathers most trusted advisors. This story is fun and informative and definitely engaging.

My favorite part of this book is Theodore explaining the “hardships” that came along with raising Alice throughout his time as president. I think children will be able to relate to this book because Alice is more of a happy-go-lucky and ornery child who always seems to be causing trouble.

A super colorful and fun way to write a B book for kids! The images are color and the information about Alice Roosevelt is not only interesting but informative! After reading this book to my daughter, she read it again on her own and doesn't want to return it to the library. Having won Parents choice award, it's no wonder it's been nominated for many more. #LAE3414SP19
