Found this illustration of the funniest scene in the book. #whattheDickens

“[S]o neatly brought their own boat in the gentlest collision with the bark of Mr Sparkler, as to tip that gentleman over like a larger species of ninepin, and cause him to exhibit the soles of his shoes to the object of his dearest wishes: while the nobler portions of his anatomy struggled at the bottom of his boat in the arms of one of his men.”

I bought this gorgeous set of books last weekend (smelling of old books). The new owner of the shop hopes to get more of these editions from a man who is hoping his books go to a good home. I think these may replace my Oxford editions, which daughter has said she‘ll take.

Sadly I haven‘t been able to fit in the tagged book for #whattheDickens. Too many other book challenges. But I‘m looking forward to next month‘s book, The Old Curiosity Shop.

Some more of Mark‘s humor! 😂 #WhatTheDickens

Cuilin 😂😂 1w
Sparklemn I enjoy Mark‘s humor immensely! Martin has a sarcastic side as well but more in his thoughts than his words. These two are quickly seeing that freedom and equality only apply to some. So basically, nothing has changed. ☹️ (edited) 2d

I‘m finally posting my September stats. A good month for me. And the tagged book was my favorite, which was for #whattheDickens

I read 4 Kurt Vonnegut books for #authoramonth,
3 books about #Nicaragua #foodandlit,
1 belated book for #Peru #foodandlit,
2 Louise Penny Three Pines books for #serieslove, &
1 book for work

Cuilin How do you think Little Dorrit compares to other Dickens you have read? I personally didn‘t enjoy it as much as others, but I think that was a me thing. 🤷‍♀️ 1w

Lcsmcat Love the quote! I marked that one too. 2w
Lcsmcat I‘ve gotten behind by a chapter or two, but have plans to catch up this weekend. 2w
Lcsmcat OK - caught up, and here are some preliminary thoughts. It‘s not as “tight” as some of Dickens‘ work, but the prose and humor are making me enjoy the journey. I‘m disturbed by the scenes in America, not because Dickens exaggerated (which he did) but because he so clearly saw our national faults, which are once again coming home to roost. 1w
Cuilin @Lcsmcat it‘s like you took every thought that was in my head and wrote it down. Yes the humor specially the little one liners are making this read enjoyable. The American scenes are interesting to me as an outsider. Dickens always tends to exaggerate to make a point, but that doesn‘t mean the point isn‘t true. And yes, the parallels ugh 😣 1w

Pickpick

Amy or “Little Dorrit,” so named by main character Arthur Clennam, was born and raised in a debtor‘s prison, Marshalsea. Arthur meets her when he returns home from abroad, visiting his mother, a monstrous woman. Amy is quietly sewing beside his mother. Arthur is quite taken with this girl. Abhorred by this poor child‘s circumstances, he sets out to improve her family‘s lot in life and even manages to do so. But he ends up jeopardizing his own. ⬇️

Texreader This is a difficult read for two reasons: 1) so many characters that become confusing (Murdle and Meagles, the different Barnacles, etc), and 2) some of the characters speak in riddles or in nonsense endlessly. For an awful long time, you don‘t know which characters you need to focus on and which are just “fluff.” But eventually (a rather long eventuality) Arthur‘s sad family history comes to light, along with its entanglement with the Dorrits. ⬇️ 2w
Texreader The book has a feel-good ending, so I quickly overcame my frustration with its length and fell for Dickens all over again. His brilliant writing style is on display (if long-winded) and his humor is spot on. He has characters you love, some you hate, and some that you just ponder. And he wraps up almost all of their lives at the end! What would make the book better: a guide to who just talks gibberish (Flora!) to be skipped! #whattheDickens (edited) 2w
Cuilin Fabulous review!! I tend to go into a book blind, and it caused me to be really confused reading Little Dorrit. Like you I didn‘t know which characters to concentrate on. For Martin Chuzzlewit, I decided to look up who the main characters are etc. It makes it so much easier. I think I‘m enjoying the process of reading MC better than LD because of that. Though Dickens being Dickens, the writing is always fabulous fun and witty. 2w
AnneCecilie I had already seen the series, some years ago (closer to 20), so had an idea about who the main characters where. Looking forward to joining you both again in November. I‘ve already bought the book @Texreader @Cuilin 2w

I‘m on Chapter 17 and I have to say—as fond as I am of dear Tom Pinch, I might be even fonder of Mark Tapley! His kindness and thoughtfulness is admirable, but I really love how he subtly puts the often insufferable Martin in his place! 😂

Ruthiella Oh I LOVED Mark Tapely and his determination to always see the positive…JOLLY! 2w
Cuilin He is a delight. 2w
Sparklemn Yes, he definitely sees through Martin‘s nonsense. 4d
