Beaded Moccasins: The Story of Mary Campbell
Beaded Moccasins: The Story of Mary Campbell | Lynda Durrant
2 posts | 1 read
Based on the true story of Mary Campbell, a 12-year-old girl kidnapped by the Delaware tribe in 1759 Pennsylvania, this story reveals Mary's refusal to adopt any of the Delaware ways, but then she pretends to learn until her chance to escape comes. When that chance to leave is at hand, Mary realizes she is no longer pretending, and she's not sure she wants to return to her old life.

This book shares fiction & fact about Mary Campbell, captured by the Delaware Indians in May 1759. One fascinating fact in the afterword states after returning to her family & marrying, neighbors referred to her 12 children as "those Mohawks". Evidently she taught them what she had learned while living with the Delaware's. I learned a great deal about compassion, geography, & survival while reading this book about Mary Campbell's life experience.

Today began with a road trip and I started reading this book. I can't remember the last time I read a book in a day. Realistically this is a child's book but the story was based on Mary Campbell's real experience as a captive of the Delaware Indians so I couldn't resist buying it at my library sale several months ago. To complete the experience of like to travel to Ohio to see the cave named after her.
