A heartfelt contemporary middle grade novel about a girl who must try to save her aunts failing pie shop, perfect for fans of The Thing About Jellyfish, Fish in a Treeand The Great British Baking Show. When Cady Bennett is sent to live with the aunt she didnt even know she had in the quaint mountain town of Julian, she isnt sure what to expect. Cady isnt used to stability, after growing up homeless in San Diego with her dad. Now shes staying in her mothers old room, exploring the countryside filled with apple orchards and pie shops, making friends, and working in Aunt Shells own pie shopand soon, Cady starts to feel like she belongs. Then she finds out that Aunt Shells shop is failing. Saving the business and protecting the first place shes ever really felt safe will take everything she's learned and the help of all her new friends. But are there some things even the perfect pie just cant fix? Summer of a Thousand Pies is a sweet and satisfying treat of a novel full of friendship, family, and, of course, pie.

After her dad's arrest, Cady is sent to live with her aunt, Shell, in a small Californian town.
It's a coming-of-age story that conveys the angst of Cady, all the feelings she's going through, and how she learns to feel better. It's an uplifting story, full of sweetness and hope.

Book 12 I have really liked Dilloway's novels. A juvenile read about a 12 year-old girl, sent to live with her aunt, a pie shop owner, while her dad is in jail. Cady learns to bake and accept her parents all while making friends and helping her aunt save her business. I am curious to try the strawberry basil pie recipe from the book, but, otherwise, it wasn't a satisfying read. Formulaic, predictable, disappointing. ⭐⭐

Very sweet story. I've been hitting the jackpot with middle-grade books lately and this one didn't disappoint. I enjoyed seeing the growth of Cady's character and her eventual acceptance of the things happening around her. There‘s a little of everything in this story — mental illness, homelessness and immigration status.
