Gateway | Frederik Pohl
Wealth . . . or death. Those were the choices Gateway offered. Humans had discovered this artificial spaceport, full of working interstellar ships left behind by the mysterious, vanished Heechee. Their destinations are preprogrammed. They are easy to operate, but impossible to control. Some came back with discoveries which made their intrepid pilots rich; others returned with their remains barely identifiable. It was the ultimate game of Russian roulette, but in this resource-starved future there was no shortage of desperate volunteers.

1. Gateway
2. Paper Mario & Mario RPG
3. Shaaaame on me, I'm more of a 90s girl. I like the hits but couldn't pinpoint one 80s band as my favorite.
4. The Princess Bride

#manicmonday @JoScho

JoScho The 90‘s has awesome music too ❤️ thanks for playing 😊 7y
parasolofdoom @JoScho this was a fun one to fill out, thanks for making it! 7y
JoScho @parasolofdoom of course 😊 7y
jwashreads I had the same problem! There are too many 90s bands to choose one, but I couldn't think of any 80s bands. 7y
parasolofdoom @jwashreads right?? I mean I like songs from all the big 80s bands but really just the things from radio. If I'm making a playlist, there's wayyyyg more 90s. 7y

This book was more psychoanalysis than space exploration, and it didn't seem like anyone actually enjoyed the space exploration. Probably due to the super high risk of painful death and the lack of genuine choice in the matter. Not a cheerful vision of the future. Excellent writing. The POV character was rather unlikable, and I still really had to know what would happen next. Still want to know more about the Heechee!

Leniverse Excited to discover that there are more books dealing with the Heechee (or at least their artefacts). 😃Excitement cooling because they star that same unlikable main character. 😕 7y

This book has the best Classifieds ads thrown in at intervals. The church one has got to be a poke at Pirsig's "Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintenance".

vivastory This sounds great. Stacked! 7y
Leniverse @vivastory The world building and story are well done. (Bleak, but well done.) It shows its age in some ways. I guess the Soviet Union could come back, but people smoking cigarettes in space ships? 😂 7y
vivastory @Leniverse Well, i know Trump is working on bringing back the Soviet Union, but I'm guessing they'll be vaping. Or using hookahs 7y

I needed a break from Lolita, it was getting to me too much. Of course, sci-fi from the 70s is rarely cheerful and optimistic either. 🙄😕😅
