San Francisco Is Burning
San Francisco Is Burning: The Untold Story of the 1906 Earthquake and Fires | Dennis Smith
6 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
A detailed account of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake reveals how hasty and corrupt construction practices made the city more vulnerable to damage and relates the experiences of such survivors as a naval officer who helped save the city's piers and wharves, unscrupulous mayor Eugene Schmitz, and erudite city boss Abe Ruef. Reprint. 75,000 first printing.

Mehso-so

The subject matter at hand is interesting and I do not disagree with the intent of the author but many of his writing choices took me out of the reading and his glossing over racism, which was a significant aspect of the political landscape didn‘t help.
It helps to have some understanding of the geography of the city, even with a partial map provided.

@jmofo Jessie, thank you for the awesome postcard from your trip to San Francisco! It‘s so cool that you could read our #LMPBC book about the SF earthquake while you were actually there! Hope you‘re enjoying it—and your trip. 🙂

jmofo Thank you. My trip was certainly good medicine but also very short. I did a lot of journaling which was important but also ate into my reading time. I‘ll be mailing the book by Monday. I‘m so glad you liked the card. 6y

#LMPBC group M
I‘m more on top of the reading schedule this month. Since life had been extra rough this year, I wedged a trip to San Francisco for a few days to get some emotional recharge and a step away from things. Visiting friendswhoarefamily has been good medicine as well as all of the alone time. I wanted to be able to mail the book from the City but it looks like I won‘t finish it in time but it will be in the mail post haste.

Amiable Enjoy your trip! Hope it recharges you. 🙂 6y

Pickpick

Completed for the “something that‘s been in your TBR list for over 1 year” box in the #nonfiction2019 challenge. This one sat on my shelves for more than 5 years. 😬 It‘s about the 1906 earthquake and fires in San Francisco. And since it‘s nonfiction, it also serves as book #1 in #LMPBC for #GroupM! I‘m multitasking. ✊🏼
