The Nightingale and the Rose
The Nightingale and the Rose | Oscar Wilde
5 posts | 11 read | 7 to read
A nightingale overhears a student complaining that his professor's daughter will not dance with him, as he is unable to give her a red rose. The nightingale visits all the rose-trees in the garden, and one of the white roses tell her that there's a way to produce a red rose, but only if the nightingale is prepared to sing the sweetest song for the rose all night, and sacrifice her life to do so. Seeing the student in tears, the nightingale carries out the ritual, and impales herself on the rose-tree's thorn so that her heart's blood can stain the rose. The student takes the rose to the professor's daughter, but she again rejects him because another man has sent her some real jewels, and "everybody knows that jewels cost far more than flowers." The student angrily throws the rose into the gutter, returns to his study of metaphysics, and decides not to believe in true love anymore.

Yes I do I have a Nightingale and a Rose from the Oscar Wilde short story - be prepared if you read it, it‘s devastating!

I also wanted Bagheera from the Jungle Book but ended up getting a regular leopard instead on my back. I wanted a regal protector character and the leopard seemed perfect.

I also want a squid from 20,000 leagues under the sea.

Maybe if people want I can post pictures of them!

The Nightingale and The Rose is a heartbreaking story about the nature of love and sacrifice. At the beginning of the story, we are given the impression that the love between the student and the girl is a true love. Later, we are struck with the truth. Their love turns out to be a shallow one based on materialistic happiness. At the end the student gives up on his love because it was not true in the first place.

"She said that she would dance with me if I brought her red roses."

I'm not one for short stories normally, but this tragic tale is one I like to re-read often. It certainly doesn't hurt that this Barnes and Noble Collectors Edition is absolutely stunning. ?

Marching band performance based on a short story... Can I go home and read now? It's like they are rubbing it in.
