I Shall Not Want
I Shall Not Want: A Clare Fergusson and Russ Van Alstyne Mystery | Julia Spencer-Fleming
5 posts | 11 read | 6 to read
Millers Kill reaches the boiling point in this white-hot novel of love and suspense People die. Marriages fail. In the small Adirondack town of Millers Kill, New York, however, life doesn't stop for heartbreak. A brand-new officer in the police department, a breaking-and-entering, and trouble within his own family keep Police Chief Russ Van Alstyne busy enough to ignore the pain of losing his wife---and the woman he loves. At St. Alban's Episcopal Church, the Reverend Clare Fergusson is trying to keep her vestry, her bishop, and her National Guard superiors happy---all the while denying her own wounded soul. When a Mexican farmhand stumbles over a Latino man killed with a single shot to the back of his head, Clare is sucked into the investigation through her involvement in the migrant community. The discovery of two more bodies executed in the same way ignites fears that a serial killer is loose in the close-knit community. While the sorrowful spring turns into a scorching summer, Russ is plagued by media hysteria, conflict within his department, and a series of baffling assaults. As the violence strikes closer and closer to home, an untried officer is tested, a wary migrant worker is tempted, and two would-be lovers who thought they had lost everything must find a way to trust each other again---before it becomes forever, fatally, too late. Julia Spencer-Fleming shows you can escape danger---but not desire---in her most suspenseful, passionate novel yet, I Shall Not Want.

Omg this series is gut wrenching but I love it and keep going back. I always enjoy the mysteries in these books but the storylines involving the regular characters are just as interesting. I'm emotionally drained at the moment so I'm not sure if I'll be able to pick another book and continue with #24in48 but if I can't this was an excellent way to end my readathon.

So I woke up with my light still on, my face smushed into my open book and my timer still running. I don't think I got very much reading done at all after I moved from the couch to my bed so I'm scrapping that whole entry. This is where I'm starting today.

#24in48

An unexpected visitor was a happy but readathon derailing surprise. I'm armed with coffee and ready to try and play catch up with book #3.

#24in48 but more like #Illbeluckyifigetto8in48

I‘ve been blazing through this series on #audiobook this year! Small town mystery series with a police chief and female episcopal priest as the leading characters and a nice cast of secondary characters too. The residents of Miller‘s Kill feel like friends now :)

#FunFridayPhoto time! I love this entire series, but I think I Shall Not Want is my fave because it works through times of immense personal and professional change for the main characters. There's hilarity (Claire has bishop problems) and some of Spencer-Fleming's best and most poignant writing in scenes at a church fundraiser and between two of Russ' young officers in the aftermath of tragedy. It reads best as a duology with All Mortal Flesh.

[DELETED] 2232195534 I love this series too!! 8y
Lynnsoprano Love this series! Read the whole see in about a month last winter when I was going through a really difficult time, and was so engrossed. Do you know if she's writing more for the series? 8y
bookishkai @Lynnsoprano she's writing the next book now. I don't know how many total are planned. The next one is going to be set in different years, much like Out of the Deep I Cry. I'm jealous that you got to read them all at once, I keep having to wait between books. 8y

raelaschoenherr I‘ve gone through the series so quickly these past few months! I just started One Was a Soldier today! 6y
raelaschoenherr @bookishkris So, what book is she working on now? Also, I wish she had a Pinterest! I want to see pictures of what the characters might look like :) 6y
bookishkai @raelaschoenherr I don‘t remember the name of the book she‘s writing; I actually don‘t know if she‘s doing any writing these days, her husband died recently and he wasn‘t well for months beforehand. 6y
raelaschoenherr @bookishkris Oh, that‘s so sad! I‘m sorry to hear that :( 6y
