Pickpick

So, a couple of things. I know the Uncle Remus Tales are controversial, mostly due to Joel Chandler Harris (white journalist) who wrote down, and profited from, African American folk tales. Even the dialect JCH uses is problematic. Now! What Julius Lester does: he removes the “kindly ex-slave” character, and provides a more accurate African American vernacular. Now we can enjoy these fantastic trickster tales. But they‘re more than that. 👇🏻👇🏻

AshleyHoss820 👆🏻👆🏻 African American slaves used tales like Brer Rabbit and Signifying Monkey to find their voice and get figurative revenge on their oppressors. If you want to read the Uncle Remus tales, I highly suggest Julius Lester‘s version. (edited) 4y
