⭐⭐⭐⭐
"They say the war's over, but they're wrong. It went too deep for that."

Beautifully written, this novel revisits WWI both the trenches and the aftermath on who survived its atrocities.. Daniel, the protagonist, tries to rebuild his life but he's hunted by the ghosts of his past and the memories of his childhood.

1920 Cornwall and Daniel returns to the village where he grew up penniless, w/o shelter or friends and shunned by a community that knew him in the past. Finding shelter at the home of a reclusive lady he makes a promise which has consequences hidden by a lie. This book is both an evocative love story as we learn of Daniel's friendship with siblings Frederick + felicia as children, in the trenches+ back home as well as a sensitive picture of trauma

This was okay!

Very atmospheric and a beautiful writing style but honestly, found myself skimming over it a lot as not enough was happening to keep me invested in the story. It is relatively short which probably plays a big part in why I bothered to finish it.

My lack of immense enjoyment may be due to me not being in the mood for historical fiction at the moment. I‘m a big mood reader!

Such a surprising gem of an impulse buy. Tender character development, sparse writing, quiet and moving story. Highly recommended. Similar type of book and writing as Stoner and Remains of the Day, in my opinion. (Image stolen from Google, as usual)

Found this on a kindle book sale today for $1.99 on Amazon. I don‘t usually buy books without researching them first, but this looked really good, and I have a predilection for books about WW1. Anyone familiar?
