dabbe @Mollyanna Mine, too! Have you ever seen this animated short? I believe it won an Oscar for best short animation back in 1953. It\'s fantastic. Here\'s the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flKOtXC4oyM 🖤🧡🖤 1mo
Mollyanna Oh, I haven‘t… I‘ll have to check it out! Thanks for sharing. 1mo
Mollyanna Yesterday, I had some time and watched the short. It was so good, and James Mason was the perfect choice for narrator. Thanks again for sharing 😊 (edited) 1mo
dabbe @Mollyanna He is spookily good, isn\'t he? I loved teaching Poe and using pop culture bits like this. The students loved it, too! 🧡🖤🧡 1mo
Mollyanna I bet this really helped engage the students into discussing Poe. What a great way to teach (wish mine had thought of that…). 😉 1mo
dabbe @Mollyanna There are so many fabulous clips re: Poe. I even played them “The Raven“ and “The Cask of Amontillado“ from the Alan Parsons Project album. They were riveted. That's what I miss about teaching. All the other crap--I mean stuff? Not at all. 😂 1mo

Poe = mystery. Not much more to be said except that this annotated version is incredibly interesting with many insights into the time period, word usage, and the life of the maestro himself. Even The Alan Parsons Project knew what to title their album in homage to Poe (one of my favorite albums, btw). 🖤🐦‍⬛🖤

PageShifter I should read more by him 1mo
dabbe @PageShifter Oh, he\'s a top five favorite authors of ALL time for me. He never wrote a novel, though. Only poems, short stories, and essays. His short stories are creepy good! 🖤🧡🖤 1mo

I prefer 1st-person POV. Not only does it allow me to truly get inside the main character's head, but that narrator is usually unreliable, so it becomes a puzzle for me to figure out what is true and what isn't. That's why Poe and Doyle are my favorite authors: usually Poe's narrators are insane murderers and Watson doesn't always tell us everything re: Sherlock's cases. 🖤

BookmarkTavern An excellent point! Thanks for sharing! 3mo

@Eggs
@Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

Poe's main thematic idea in a number of his poems/short stories: madness/obsession with a young woman (usually a dead one, but still); this idea seems to jive with this song.

Eggs This is perfect! “Dead woman, but still” 🤣🤣 1y

@Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

For me, any EAP story is perfect for a storm, especially USHER: “The impetuous fury of the entering gust nearly lifted us from our feet. It was, indeed, a tempestuous yet sternly beautiful night, and one wildly singular in its terror and its beauty.“ His storms are characters in the stories. One's even entitled “The Maelstrom.“ #poelover

Aimeesue We visited his rooms in Baltimore and his room at UVA over the past few years of living in Virginia. His rooms were really cramped, very low ceilings and the staircase was so narrow we had to take turns going up and down the stairs. 😁 2y
dabbe @Aimeesue Amazing! I have to get to Baltimore and see his residences(s). He hardly ever had any money, so that might explain the small place/rooms, but perhaps people were (dare I say) tinier back then too. 😀 2y

Pickpick

How I wish I had had this book when I was still teaching! Hayes has outdone himself with his intense and earnest research. One will learn not only the background of each story, but also visit the time periods, places, and people (real or imagined) that had an influence on Poe and added to his creations. For people who want to truly delve into the psyche of some of the most read and/or valued stories and poems of Poe, this is the book for you.
