No Good Men Among the Living
No Good Men Among the Living: America, the Taliban, and the War through Afghan Eyes | Anand Gopal
5 posts | 6 read | 2 reading | 6 to read
Told through the lives of three Afghans, the stunning tale of how the United States had triumph in sight in Afghanistanand then brought the Taliban back from the dead In a breathtaking chronicle, acclaimed journalist Anand Gopal traces in vivid detail the lives of three Afghans caught in America's war on terror. He follows a Taliban commander, who rises from scrawny teenager to leading insurgent; a US-backed warlord, who uses the American military to gain personal wealth and power; and a village housewife trapped between the two sides, who discovers the devastating cost of neutrality. Through their dramatic stories, Gopal shows that the Afghan war, so often regarded as a hopeless quagmire, could in fact have gone very differently. Top Taliban leaders actually tried to surrender within months of the US invasion, renouncing all political activity and submitting to the new government. Effectively, the Taliban ceased to existyet the Americans were unwilling to accept such a turnaround. Instead, driven by false intelligence from their allies and an unyielding mandate to fight terrorism, American forces continued to press the conflict, resurrecting the insurgency that persists to this day. With its intimate accounts of life in war-torn Afghanistan, Gopal's thoroughly original reporting lays bare the workings of America's longest war and the truth behind its prolonged agony. A heartbreaking story of mistakes and misdeeds, No Good Men Among the Living challenges our usual perceptions of the Afghan conflict, its victims, and its supposed winners.

A non-fiction account of the everyday lives of three people living in Afghanistan after 9/11. This book changed what I thought I knew. It was a hard read, but a really good one. #FoodAndLit

Gopal follows 3 Afghans,a Taliban commander, a US backed warlord ,& an educated village housewife to demonstrate how difficult it is/was to get a positive result in Afghanistan.Detailed & well written, reality is most just want to raise their family in peace. We have warlords accusing enemies of being terrorists so the US will lock them up,the provisional police extorting money from anyone who has a shop stall.Shows how the Taliban would rise again

Superb! Narrative and investigative non-fiction of the very highest order. No Good Men Among the Living by Anand Gopal is wholly absorbing. Mr. Gopal's storytelling is imbued with a sense of understanding and moral seriousness of the broad landscape of Afghanistan's war through the lives of ordinary people all trying to survive. His close observations and delicate renderings of the war on terror is sad but true that, ultimately, the war 👇

thevagabondlawyer has become a business for the opportunists, jockeying for patronage, warlords and strongmen perpetuating for power in their own turfs, creating a massive avenue for corruption, thus, regenerating the war. This book offers another perspective on this war, not from the officials or leaders but from the frontliners, brokers, civilians who most profited, suffered and endured. 👊👏 3y

Clearly 2019 is the year for amazing nonfiction. This backlist title follows Taliban militants, fighters aligned with pro western forces, and civilians. As the title suggests, there are dangerous and violent elements everywhere you look. A primer on 2000s Afghanistan, and a dive into a society where extreme violence is normalized and the effects on citizens. Extremely well done.

Zelma I‘ve wanted to read only nonfiction recently. I already read a lot but this year will probably be very heavy on the nonfiction side. Looking forward to some great new titles this year! 5y
