The Case of Charles Dexter Ward (Fantasy and Horror Classics)
The Case of Charles Dexter Ward (Fantasy and Horror Classics) | H. P. Lovecraft
5 posts | 19 read | 4 to read
This early work by H. P. Lovecraft was originally published in 1941. Born in 1890 in Rhode Island, USA, Lovecraft began writing at a very young age, quickly developing a deep and abiding interest in science. In 1913, Lovecraft joined the UAPA (United Amateur Press Association) but it was four years later, in 1917, that he began to focus on fiction, producing such well-known early stories as 'Dagon' and 'A Reminiscence of Dr. Samuel Johnson'. However, it was during the last decade of his life that Lovecraft produced his most notable works, such as 'the Dunwich Horror' and 'The Call of Cthulhu' which subsequently earned him his place as one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th century. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.

Pickpick

Soft pick. Includes everything a true Lovecraftian story needs, but didn't suck me in as much as some of his other stories. It's well thought-through, with different main characters and different layers. There are some scenes that will stay with me, what might isn't a good thing, when it comes to Lovecraft 😉 But it just shows what a talented story writer he is.

Pickpick

This is one of HPL's longer works (a short novel). It shares plot elements with other HPL works but is unique enough to not be boring to someone who has read his other material. Though some parts are a little slow, overall the pacing is good and the element of mystery and rising horror is excellent. I was worried about long, tangential excursuses typical in some of his longer tales, but was pleasantly surprised that there weren't any of note.

I wasn‘t familiar with the original story by Lovecraft, and I leave this graphic novel adaptation only somewhat aware of what that story was. I feel like I got it but I didn‘t fully understand it, which is a shame. The art is super creepy. #scarathlon #teamslaughter 2 pts for being on theme, #scaryscavengerhunt matte cover
