From a cultured, cosmopolitan woman of considerable influence, Miriam‘s mother burned all the family‘s possession, faked her own death, disguised herself as a peasant woman, and escaped on foot with a young child in tow. This is the #graphicmemoir of the author as a very young girl fleeing Budapest with her mother during the Nazi invasion. In addition to their experiences, the author was trying to communicate the loss of belief in God she (and her soldier father) experienced during this time, reference title “We Are on Our Own.” The emotion of the story felt incomplete to me somehow, perhaps because it is too difficult a story to share.

I heard Miriam Katin speak during theSingapore Writers Festival last year and was absolutely riveted. Her memoir of survival during WWII along with her beautiful mother, and her crisis of faith as a child and as an adult makes this a compelling read. For our #LiteraturaEuropa reading theme til end of August.

When Budapest was invaded by German troops during World War II Miriam Katin's mother faked hers and Miriam's death, left everything behind and fled on foot. In this graphic memoir Katin revisits these traumatic experiences and interrogates her ensuing struggle with faith. The story is told in pencil drawings - predominantly in black. Only scenes set after the 1940s are in colours. The style is highly effective.
