Singout
Pickpick

An eye-opening and vulnerable sharing of the author‘s coming-out story as non-binary, in a culture that still is largely fixated on people identifying as one gender or the other, even if they are LGBT. I particularly appreciated the author‘s emergence reflected in varying responses of friends and family and ongoing fear of coming out and how to articulate it. I could also appreciate the extreme pain of a Pap test! #Nonfiction2024 #Genderqueer

TheBookHippie I learned a lot reading this one. 3w

Thanks everyone for the helpful suggestions for ways to make these tiny books turn out better! I realized I could post a picture showing off the books themselves. I made two copies of each book as an experiment, one with small versions of the existing book pages and one with book info to be a book recommendation. I'll probably only do the version that can be a recommendation instead of the small pages version moving forward. #LitsyCrafters

Kenyazero (one reason I need to modify how I make the books: all of the books scattered in these pictures were not pulled out. Because they warped a bit, they pop out when books are removed!) 1mo

The Talk | Darrin Bell

A beautifully realized graphic memoir about growing up biracial/Black in America. Bell has always turned his struggles and insights into powerful words and pictures, thereby also earning a living and a Pulitzer prize. But as his baby son gets older, he has to reckon with everything he's learned in order to prepare him for what he'll face. Very touching and meaningful.

Messy Roots is a pretty terrific, nuanced, always engaging graphic memoir of a queer Wuhanese-American woman in Texas.

1. Watermelon 🍉
2. Relish by Lucy Knisley is perfect for any foodie. This is the first book of hers I read & have since read them all. I enjoy her artwork & my favorite was the one she wrote about her pregnancy.

2/5
First, it's the author's personal experience with alcoholism and her body, and I value her sharing her own experiences with such honesty. But, I had a hard time getting into it (probably the style of the delivery), and while I found some pages interesting, overall it wasn't my cup of tea.

Another graphic memoir centering a crisis of faith! I‘m on a roll…this one focuses on Mann‘s upbringing in an Orthodox Jewish community. At a young age, he realized that he was gay. This does a good job illustrating his difficulties navigating the traumas he experienced, as he notes, “at the intersection of high-demand religion and authoritarian parenting.” The art, by Mann and his partner Ryan Gatts, is simple and highlights shades of blue. ⬇️

psalva The story ends when Mann is about to head to college, but it leaves off at a good place when he is beginning to make choices to be truer to himself and create distance from his faith. I feel stories like this have the potential to be controversial for faithful folks. Personally, I felt this was respectful, though not uncritical, always focusing on the choices that the author made to be happy. I‘m happy I picked this up. (edited) 2mo

Am I reading yet another cat graphic novel? Of course I am. And it‘s just as relatable as others I‘ve read in the past. 😻

ShananigansReads This is my Zuri! He stands beside me and looks at me then looks at the tablet then looks a me and back and forth until I move it. 😹😹😹 3mo

I got this big beautiful graphic novel for Christmas last year and it was so great to finally read it. It‘s a sobering memoir full of sexism and a kind of tense unsettling undercurrent of violence. But still a very raw look at the authors stage of life, trying to make money and the lengths she does to in order to do that, and the cost the oil industry has on not just the environment but the workers. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
