Alexander Hamilton: The Outsider
Alexander Hamilton: The Outsider | Jean Fritz
5 posts | 6 read
Award-winning biographer Jean Fritz brings one of America's favorite Founding Fathers to life! Most people know that Alexander Hamilton was killed in a duel with Aaron Burr, and that his face is on the ten-dollar bill. But he was much more than that, and here acclaimed biographer Jean Fritz explores all facets of his life. Born in the West Indies, Hamilton arrived in New York as an outsider. He fought in the Revolution and became Washington's most valuable aide-de-camp. He was there for the writing of the Constitution and became the first Secretary of the Treasury. Fritz's talent for bringing historical figures to life shines as she shares her fascination with this man of action who was honorable, ambitious, and fiercely loyal to his adopted country.

I loved this biography. Well written for younger audiences.

My kids and I have become obsessed with Alexander Hamilton since I saw the play. Listening to the soundtrack nonstop has attracted the attention of my kids. This book was adequate, but suffers a bit since it condenses a lot of information into a book meant for kids. The book that inspired Lin-Manuel Miranda is in my Amazon cart. I can‘t wait for that one.

So, of course Hamilton books are popping up all over -- or maybe I'm just noticing them! -- because of the musical. Jean Fritz wrote this one in 2011; she's one of my favorite bio authors for children's books and I'm looking forward to seeing how she did with this one.

Prep work for the season finale of CYA Podcast: book reviews of children and young adult books. we break for summer and return this fall. I'm very excited to talk about books either directly related, influenced, or referred to by the Hamilton Musical. #myshot

All the players are here: Mulligan, Laurens, Lafayette, Burr, Lee, Rochambeau and many more. A delight to see characters from the musical mentioned as part of Hamilton's life. Pair this with Duel by Judith George.
