I enjoyed reading this book because it is not often I read wordless books. The illustrations in the book convey the emotions of the characters well. I would use this book with students because this would allow students to get creative about how the characters are feeling and maybe they could write the words for the story.

A Ball for Daisy was the Caldecott medal winner in 2012. The book is about a dog named Daisy who has a ball, she takes the ball to the park. Once Daisy is at the park she begins to play with another dog. While they are playing the ball pops. The next time Daisy and her owner come to the park the other dog is waiting for her with a surprise. This book is wordless, so Daisy's emotions are displayed through illustrations.

I actually loved this book. As a dog and all around animal lover I thought this book was so cute. As an educator I loved that this book tells a story without the use of words. Including different types of books at different levels is so important. This book truly captures the quote “a picture is worth a thousand words”.

blurb
Cjloftus
A Ball for Daisy | Chris Raschka

Chris Raschka portrays an entire story of a dog without using a single word. He uses squiggly lines to create out lines of the dog with out adding small details like exact furs or even coloring him in. The colors of the back ground portray the emotions of the characters. For example when Daisy is happy the background may be yellow but it would be gray if she was sad.

This picture book has no words in it and relies soley on illustrations. It showcases a dog who loves his red ball and goes everywhere with it until it pops one day and he is sad. The illustrations alone make it easy to understand what is being conveyed and the emotions the illustrator is showing.

This book contains no words, but tells a story as if it does. The images perfectly display the love Daisy has for her ball and the despair she has when the ball is deflated. Chris Raschka uses light, and almost blotchy, strokes to create his images that bring so much life to Daisy.

A ball for Daisy by Chris Raschka and is the winner of the 2012 Caldecott. This gorgeous watercolor illustrated book has no words but the emotions and story is beautifully conveyed. This is nice because children and the reader can create their own narration and talk about loss and sadness from losing something but then also talk about the joy of having something you really like.

I would use this in a fourth or fifth grade classroom. I would use it as a writing prompt for the children. I would assign them each a page and have them write the book together.

This is a Caldecott Award-Winning picture book. It is also all pictures and no words. But the story throughout the book is about a dog, Daisy, who LOVES her red ball. She takes it everywhere and is always playing with it. She even sleeps with it! And then one day, at the park, she accidentally loses it over the fence and another dog takes it and begins playing with it. Long story short, a group of kids gives her a new blue ball and she is happy!
