A Ball for Daisy by Chris Raschka is a Caldecott winner. This book has no words and you follow the main character, Daisy the dog, chasing her ball across the pages. Daisy eventually loses the ball and becomes a great way to introduce the concept of loss to young children. The lack of words leaves the illustrations open to interpretations for young children.

I would use this book in a classroom to lead into a discussion about emotions and how they can change. This is also a good story for identifying emotions based on expressions or gestures.

This is a wordless book about a dog, Daisy, who has a red ball she loves, then loses it. She ends up getting a new blue ball. Daisy‘s changes in emotions throughout the story are depicted clearly in the illustrations. In the beginning, Daisy is happy and loves her red ball. When Daisy loses the ball, you can see that she feels mad, then sad. When she gets the blue ball, she‘s happy again.

This book could be used in the classroom, even though it‘swordless. Students love coming up with their own stories. So they‘re using the illustrations students can write their own words for what they are interpreting for what is happening. you could also use this book to study how illustrations can tell a story too.

I enjoyed reading this book because it is not often I read wordless books. The illustrations in the book convey the emotions of the characters well. I would use this book with students because this would allow students to get creative about how the characters are feeling and maybe they could write the words for the story.

I actually loved this book. As a dog and all around animal lover I thought this book was so cute. As an educator I loved that this book tells a story without the use of words. Including different types of books at different levels is so important. This book truly captures the quote “a picture is worth a thousand words”.

blurb
Cjloftus
A Ball for Daisy | Chris Raschka

Chris Raschka portrays an entire story of a dog without using a single word. He uses squiggly lines to create out lines of the dog with out adding small details like exact furs or even coloring him in. The colors of the back ground portray the emotions of the characters. For example when Daisy is happy the background may be yellow but it would be gray if she was sad.

This picture book has no words in it and relies soley on illustrations. It showcases a dog who loves his red ball and goes everywhere with it until it pops one day and he is sad. The illustrations alone make it easy to understand what is being conveyed and the emotions the illustrator is showing.

This book contains no words, but tells a story as if it does. The images perfectly display the love Daisy has for her ball and the despair she has when the ball is deflated. Chris Raschka uses light, and almost blotchy, strokes to create his images that bring so much life to Daisy.
