This was as close to perfect as you could get. Very appropriate for Middle Grade readers. The intensity of forced boy soldiers is leveled by the humor and just plain likeability of the characters. It isn't graphic, yet the amoral military is seen by the kidnappings, the bigotry, and the bulliness. I never knew of Burma's sad history, especially of the native tribes that are being persecuted. Bamboo People is so good that I finished it in one day. It is divided into two parts: part one is about a boy who is forced to become a Burmese soldier and part two about a Karenni boy who must make a difficult choice. I like the characters because they each have their individual strengths and love for their families to guide them. #ReadingAsia2021 #Burma

An awesome, well-written novel about a conflict not widely discussed. The interwoven characters from two cultures bring the book to life. Perfect for summer reading.
