#ARichLife
#pumpkin #saints #fireside #bounty

Day 6- pumpkin on my work desk
Day 8- book I have read on Saints
Day 9- FDR started his radio “ fireside chats” in 1933
Day 10- my husband has been cooking a bounty of meals from his Burmese cookbook. He visited there in 1980s & could not have any evidence on him that stated or inferred he was a journalist or he would have been arrested.

Eggs Well done 👍🏼 7h

I Did Something Bad: A Novel | Pyae Moe Thet War

Pickpick

While there are parts of this that require you to suspend disbelief, I Did Something Bad is so much more than just a romance with a hint of suspense. I would argue this is more about friendships, focusing on trust and belief, finding oneself, and even a bit of social justice issues.

I enjoyed getting to know the culture of Myanmar as I knew little outside of the civil unrest and armed conflict. ⬇️

Kristy_K Khin is a journalist on the cusp of a career move if she can get the scoop on movie star Tyler. What begins as a professional agreement escalates to friendship after Khin accidentally kills a man in self-defense. They decide not to come forward (for reasons explained) & while this becomes the underlying plot, the highlights are really about how their friendship grows from their connection on social issues & their relationship w/ their friends. 8mo

An insider's travelogue, originally written in English in the nineties (and published later). Ma Thanegi, an artist from Yangon, goes on a pilgrimage bus tour around Myanmar, and tells us about the people she meets, the food she eats and the places she sees. I learned a lot and it's also a good springboard for further research (because my knowledge of #Myanmar was abysmal). The photos in the French version were well chosen.

Burmese Days | George Orwell

Pickpick

Set in Burma in the 1920‘s this describes British imperialism and racism in that time. A group of white men who are members of a club that really has no purpose other than drinking decide who can and can‘t join. The characters are vile but Orwell manages to inject some humour into his writing making this more of an enjoyable read than I thought

Somewhere between a pick & so-so and yet overall, I recommend this book. I‘ve outlined my reasons for my indecisive rating in my GR review.

This would make a great book club book. So much to unpack and discuss.

This is my Jan #bookspin 🎉 After falling so far behind last year, I‘m super happy that I‘m on track with #bookspin2022!

#roaringwolf “finally”

Only 194 more books to go before my (self-imposed) book buying ban ends! 😆

GarethSouthwell That's an interesting point about individualism versus communal identity. I guess it takes an outsider to the West to see that.

Mehso-so

Meh. Only reason I'm not totally against it is because of its historical value. Other than that, I felt like that the intention and emotion is very forced.
