Parrot and Olivier in America
Parrot and Olivier in America | Peter Carey
5 posts | 12 read | 2 to read
Parrot and Olivier in America has been shortlisted for the 2010 Man Booker Prize. From the two-time Booker Prizewinning author comes an irrepressibly funny new novel set in early nineteenth-century America. Olivieran improvisation on the life of Alexis de Tocquevilleis the traumatized child of aristocratic survivors of the French Revolution. Parrot is the motherless son of an itinerant English printer. They are born on different sides of history, but their lives will be connected by an enigmatic one-armed marquis. When Olivier sets sail for the nascent United Statesostensibly to make a study of the penal system, but more precisely to save his neck from one more revolutionParrot will be there, too: as spy for the marquis, and as protector, foe, and foil for Olivier. As the narrative shifts between the perspectives of Parrot and Olivier, between their picaresque adventures apart and togetherin love and politics, prisons and finance, homelands and brave new landsa most unlikely friendship begins to take hold. And with their story, Peter Carey explores the experiment of American democracy with dazzling inventiveness and with all the richness and surprise of characterization, imagery, and language that we have come to expect from this superlative writer. From the Hardcover edition.

Peter Carey is never going to be a favorite, but I do admire him even if I don‘t love him. This started off well but became baggy in the middle. A French aristocrat travels to antebellum America to ostensibly writes treatise on American prisons but really to escape political threats. He‘s accompanied by Englishman Parrot, a nominal servant but very much his own man and with a tragic past.

Ruthiella @BarbaraBB This is the third book of his I‘ve read. Oscar and Lucinda was the first and I still have THREE other books of his on my physical shelves. 😅 2mo

BarbaraBB Why?! I won‘t read any more by him. I didn‘t like the book you read and neither did I like 2mo
Ruthiella @BarbaraBB I collected them all before I‘d ever read him because I have a good friend who really likes his work. They‘re all beautiful first editions that I thrifted so I will need to find them good homes. 2mo

I liked the story and the structure. Chapters alternate between the two protagonists and the whole narrative is told through their eyes. Great time period for the setting but I felt it was perhaps 100 pages too long. A very enjoyable read though. I would recommend it. 😊

Although I enjoyed it at some parts, I kept wondering what this book was all about. It is the story of the aristocrat Olivier (based on Alexis de Toqueville, who I don't know and am not really interested in) and his servant, Parrot, a man with a wild past. They despise eachother at first but get closer when they arrive in the States.
A lot happens, but I couldn't really care. Nor for me, this one. #booker #manbooker

Libby1 I bailed on this one! It seemed pretty pointless. Glad I'm not alone in my assessment of this book. 🙂 9y
Libby1 Strangely, I bought this book when I was visiting Amsterdam! My husband and I were there on holiday and ran out of reading material. 9y
BarbaraBB @libby1 I bailed his True History of the Kelly Gang. Not too big a fan of him I guess, although I really enjoyed Oscar and Lucinda. (edited) 9y

BarbaraBB @Libby1 Was Ansterdam so boring that you ran out of books 😉?! 9y
Libby1 Wash your mouth out! 😁 Amsterdam is one of my favourite places on earth. I'm American but my family heritage is Dutch. I've been to the Netherlands a number of times because I now live in Northern Ireland. Yes, maybe this author isn't for either of us. 9y
BarbaraBB @Libby1 Good to hear that. I am happily living in Amsterdam! 9y
