Undue Influence
Undue Influence | Anita Brookner
5 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
In Undue Influence, acclaimed novelist Anita Brookner proves once again that even in the most closely circumscribed of lives, hearts can venture into unknown-and potentially explosive-territory. Claire Pitt is nothing if not a practical young woman, living a life in contemporary London that is to all appearances placid, orderly and consciously lacking in surprise. And yet Claire's tangled interior life gives the lie to that illusion. She is prone to vivid speculation about the lives of others, and to fantasies about her own fate that lead her into a courtship so strange that even she wonders at its power to compel her. Martin Gibson and his chronically ill wife Cynthia come to depend on Claire to an extent that is nothing short of baffling, and yet Claire becomes ever bolder in her pursuit of their acquaintance-and, ultimately, of Martin's elusive affections. The result, a potent tale of urban loneliness and the chance intersections that assuage it, constitutes one of Brookner's finest and most psychologically acute achievements. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Reading this one , it‘s a few years since I read Brookner. I like her more than I ever remember, such a calming influence. I‘ll have to gather my thoughts to try and explain why I think she is so perfect. ♥️

sarahbarnes I want to read more of her! Lovely to hear you like her so much. 10mo
Cathythoughts @sarahbarnes I do like her. She has a way of grounding me. I don‘t know why , something zen about the way she writes and what she writes about. (edited) 10mo
Suet624 I haven‘t read her in years! Guess I should consider picking up a recent book. 😉 10mo

LeahBergen I‘m always so pleasantly surprised when I pick up one of her novels. 10mo
Ruthiella I love only liked Hotel du Lac but the other two I read from her depressed me. It‘s been a few years, however. Maybe I should give her another shot? 🤔 10mo
Cathythoughts @Ruthiella Yes I can see she could be depressing , very depressing. But she doesn‘t have that effect on me. I‘ll have to be thinking about it. Interesting 🤔 10mo
Cathythoughts @LeahBergen Yes , that‘s what‘s just happened to me , I‘m pleasantly surprised! 😁 I‘ll have to pick her up more often. (edited) 10mo
CarolynM @Ruthiella I‘m with you. I read a few many years ago - the passivity of the women left me both sad and frustrated. 10mo
Ruthiella @CarolynM Glad I‘m not alone here. 10mo
Centique I havent read this one but ive loved the three i have read. In those three at least i felt the women were strong in themselves, even if they were overlooked by others. 10mo
Cathythoughts @Centique Yes , the women are interesting. This one has an existential feel to it. 10mo

Bailedbailed

Temporarily bailing though I will read at some point. Starts with a lot of discussion about the death of the protagonist's mother - too close too soon for me.
