Handmaid's Tale | Cliffs Notes
4 posts | 4 read | 6 to read
The original CliffsNotes study guides offer expert commentary on major themes, plots, characters, literary devices, and historical background. The latest generation of titles in this series also feature glossaries and visual elements that complement the classic, familiar format. In "CliffsNotes on The Handmaid's Tale, " you come to realize that for every utopia, there's a corresponding dystopia. This tale of a bleak future depicts a time where women are valued only for their reproductive capacities. While this cautionary tale of repression and totalitarianism is horrifying, there are moments of poetic warmth and humor. It is a brilliant satire. This concise supplement to Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale" helps you understand the overall structure of the novel, actions and motivations of the characters, and the social and cultural perspectives of the author. Features that help you study includeChapter-by-chapter summaries and commentariesA timeline of critical events that leads to the climax of the novelA character map that graphically illustrates the relationships among the charactersCritical essays on women's roles in the novel, and the use of literary devices, themes, and settingsA review section that tests your knowledgeClassic literature or modern modern-day treasure you'll understand it all with expert information and insight from CliffsNotes study guides."

Thanks to whoever posted that this was free on kindle unlimited...I had been wanting to reread it before watching the show since I must have read it something like 20 years ago and didn't remember it. Being lazy at work today.

My next Book Club book.

On the one hand, I've read it and it's a truly great novel.

On the other hand, I'm not looking forward to sitting in a circle with a dozen people all commenting obliquely on how relevant it is in our current political climate.

Macnjen I keep seeing reviews of this book and keep thinking I need to read it, but I'm not sure if I should read it. Thoughts? 8y
Yossarian @Macnjen It's a truly great book about a dystopian future where religious fanatics take over America following a collapse in the fertility rate. Definitely read it. 8y
Macnjen Thanks! 8y
KathyWheeler Clare Danes does a great job of narrating it if you'd rather go the audio route. 8y
Cortg @KathyWheeler I read it years ago and heard Clare Danes does a great job with the audio but I can't find any of my 5 county libraries that have it has an eaudio :( 8y
