As these books go on I'm convinced James Bond is a long lost brother of the Chuckle Brothers. He really is rather dim. You're a spy Bond, you religiously check all your hotels rooms for devices and disturbances yet didn't notice a naked girl hiding under your sheets. Deary me.

The conversation between Tania and Bond where she asked him to beat her if she put on weight was probably the biggest eye roll I've every done when reading a book.

What evocative writing. I would love to visit Istanbul!

SRWCF I ❤️ seeing all of this Ian Fleming on your feed! I have a few of his books on my shelf as well. 😉 3y
Vansa I hugely enjoy the James Bond books. I've chosen that as my subject for a 10 question quiz in January, so reading them all again in preparation! 3y

Back when I was younger, I went through a James Bond phase-watched the movies (on VHS! 😆) and scoured second hand shops for copies of the novels. I had a lot of fun collecting and reading them and From Russia with Love fits today‘s prompt Russia 🇷🇺.

TheKidUpstairs What a cool collection of covers! ❤🤵‍♂️🍸 4y
Ruthiella @TheKidUpstairs Thanks! Love the emojis you used! 😀 4y
Reggie A View to a Kill is my favorite. It is the only one I still own on VHS. I have no idea why as a kid I had a thing for Roger Moore. Lol. (edited) 4y
Ruthiella @Reggie Roger Moore was my first film Bond too! 😀 4y
Ruthiella @Reggie PS Now I‘m going to have the Duran Duran song on my head all day! 😅 4y

I spent more than a week on the last book from the neapolitan series so I 'deserve' a quick and easy read. James Bond should do it.

Pickpick

This one has good moments: I enjoyed the foreshadowing of the plot, which nicely built tension before Bond appeared, and Fleming's glimpses into Bond's inner life rounds him out somewhat. But, obviously, the sexism and rape culture palls.

Either Fleming was getting formulaic by book five, or I'm losing interest in the series, but this didn't seem as good to me as it's predecessors.
3/5🌟

Bond's in-flight reading, "The Mask of Dimitrios" by Eric Ambler. Presumably, Ambler's setting of his story in Istanbul appealed to Bond, as that's where he's off to on assignment.

Leftcoastzen don‘t know why they changed the title for U.S.market , I read it years ago inspired by some mysteries you must read list.I remember liking it. 6y
Bookwomble @Leftcoastzen And then the US film version with Peter Lorre and Sydney Greenstreet reverted to the original "Mask" title. I've neither read the book or seen the film, but would like to do both. 6y
Leftcoastzen I need to see the film 6y
CarolynM I thought it was pretty good when I read it @Leftcoastzen 6y

I need some junk food, so 007 it is! 🚂🚃🚃 🍸🤵🏻💂🏻‍♀️🗡

This Pan edition was published in 1961, a year or so prior to Bond's first film outing, so no Sean Connery lookalike on the cover, but an artist's rendering closer to Fleming's description of Bond as appearing similar to then popular singer-songwriter, Hoagy Carmichael.
According to the blurb, my weak nerves will be shredded by this book! 😱😬🤯

Leftcoastzen Love this Pan! 🎶🎵ole buttermilk sky, I‘m keepin my eye peeled on you....🎶 6y
CouronneDhiver I saw your comment on Do one else‘s post about your momma. I‘m so sorry 💔 6y
CarolynM Love that cover! As I remember it, this is quite a good story🙂 6y
Bookwomble @CouronneDhiver Thank you, Danielle 🙂 6y
Bookwomble @CarolynM I've enjoyed the earlier books in the series, so I'm going this maintains the feeling. 6y

I don't really do scary so I'm falling back on a classic. Rosa Klebb was pretty creepy.

somebooksaround Classic! So funny, I was just watching Goldfinger! 🙌🙌 7y
PagesOfKate You're so right! Rosa gave me nightmares when I was a kid. Very creepy. 7y

Pickpick

I loved listening to this book despite the pervasive and blantant sexism, the lack of James Bond in the first several chapters, and the silly and overly complicated plot by the Russians to bring the West to its knees. It was just fun, and Bond is a much better character in the books than is often depicted on film.

I'm actually listening to this on audiobook even though I own a copy. I figured now is a good time to get familiar with Russian spies!
