Process
Process: The Writing Lives of Great Authors | Sarah Stodola
7 posts | 8 read | 13 to read
Ernest Hemingway, Zadie Smith, Joan Didion, Franz Kafka, David Foster Wallace, and more. In Process, acclaimed journalist Sarah Stodola examines the creative methods of literature's most transformative figures. Each chapter contains a mini biography of one of the world's most lauded authors, focused solely on his or her writing process. Unlike how-to books that preach writing techniques or rules, Process puts the true methods of writers on display in their most captivating incarnation: within the context of the lives from which they sprang. Drawn from both existing material and original research and interviews, Stodola brings to light the fascinating, unique, and illuminating techniques behind these literary behemoths.

Mehso-so

I recognise what's going on here, of course: "if I adopt the habits of my heroes, maybe I'll write as well as they do." What the book shows is that writers' routines are as idiosyncratic as the writers themselves and if it works then it works. I wanted more. The book I really wanted to read would have been called something like "Writers' Rituals: What They Are and How They Work". It's not this book's fault that it isn't *that* imaginary book.

I found this purely by accident, and for free, on Amazon. It has been a fabulous read so far. I only wish it were longer.

Pickpick

Made 300 books read on Goodreads with this gem! It is exactly what it claims to be: a description of the way each famous writer sits down and gets it done. I read it during breaks at work and each chapter is the perfect length for that. It gives great insight as to what did and did not work for these authors. As a result, it can also serve as a look at what may or may not work for aspiring authors. I loved this book!

Pickpick

Varying from F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jack Kerouac, David Foster Wallace to Zadie Smith, amongst many more, this book is divided into section on differing work habits. There are writers who treat the process like a 9 to 5 job, those who take their time and those who place themselves inside their stories. I really enjoyed this collection but I have to say that the current writers were the most interesting.

I've been reading this off and on for a while. For some reason this quote about Hemingway made me laugh. It is getting past my bedtime though so that may be why:)
