The National Team
The National Team: The Inside Story of the Women Who Changed Soccer | Caitlin Murray
7 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
The U.S. Womens National Soccer Team has won three World Cups and four Olympic gold medals, set record TV ratings, drawn massive crowds, earned huge revenues for FIFA and U.S. Soccer, and helped to redefine the place of women in sports. But despite their dominance, and their rosters of superstar players, theyve endured striking inequality: low pay, poor playing conditions, and limited opportunities to play in professional leagues. The National Team, from leading soccer journalist Caitlin Murray, tells the history of the USWNT in full, from their formation in the 1980s to the run-up to the 2019 World Cup, chronicling both their athletic triumphs and less visible challenges off the pitch. Murray also recounts the rise and fall of U.S. professional leagues, including the burgeoning National Womens Soccer League, an essential part of the womens game. Through nearly 100 exclusive interviews with players, coaches, and team officials, including Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd, Hope Solo, Heather OReilly, Julie Foudy, Brandi Chastain, Pia Sundhage, Tom Sermanni, and Sunil Gulati, Murray takes readers inside the locker rooms and board rooms in engrossing detail. A story of endurance and determination, The National Team is a complete portrait of this beloved and important team.

Pickpick

A good history that tells more about certain arguments and the history of random coaching changes and harsh interpersonal issues (whew, some of the statements!!) on the USWNT that ends up talking more about collective bargaining than one might have expected. Not a single mention of sexual orientation but quite a few discussions of players with kids. I believe the CBA has advanced protections for queer players AND pregnant players/parents. 🤔 4️⃣⭐️

“The national team‘s current collective bargaining agreement is the latest chapter in a story that has been told over more than three decades. Now, it‘s a story that has inspired other women‘s sports to carve out similar paths. In that sense, the players of the national team have emerged as a different kind of role model—not just to girls who play soccer but to female sports teams around the world who demand equal treatment.” 💪🏽⚽️❤️

This is after Hope Solo said the Swedish team played like cowards (she said a lot more, but).

“The comment spread like wildfire and Solo was roundly criticized for being a sore loser and defying the competitive spirit of the Olympics.

“Solo says now: ‘The media said I was the selfish one, that I was the poor sport. But I cared. I went home heartbroken and some of the players went to Rio to party. It‘s all how you want to tell the story.‘” #USWNT

“ The lawyers at Winston & Strawn who worked on the filing saw their email inboxes flooded with messages from young girls who wanted to contact the players. Some of them were writing papers for school projects. Some just wanted to let the players know they supported them. Others were saying thanks.

‘It was a moving response,‘ says Jeffrey Kessler. ⬇️

suzisteffen “Sauerbrunn says she is still getting requests from young fans working on school projects about equal pay and women soccer.” 6y
suzisteffen This book is an emotional read. IN OTHER NEWS, FIFA doubled the WWC purse to a total of $30 million (US) and then added another $30 million to the MWC purse, making that $440 million. WWC, $30m. MWC, $440m. WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUUUUUUDGE 6y

Wow uh #USAUSAUSA or whatever. Uber Pool for the USWNT, Norway WNT, and Sweden WNT to get to China in 1991 for the World Cup. 👀👀👀💩⚽️

suzisteffen “There were few perks to being on the national team in those days. Even traveling the world was less exciting than it sounded. 6y
suzisteffen “When the US players took their flight to the 1991 World Cup in China, they were confused as to why they were flying the opposite way around the world. In an apparent money-saving move, the plane stopped to pick up the Swedish and Norwegian teams along the way. 6y
suzisteffen “‘ Then when we went home, instead of just crossing the Pacific Ocean, we went all the way back around to drop everybody off and then landed in New York,‘ remembers Brandi Chastain, who first became a national team regular in 1986.” 6y
