Pickpick

Includes the first three of Roddy Doyle's novels, centering around the Rabbittes, a working- class family in Dublin, in the late 80s/early 90s. The Commitments is probably the best known of the three, but I much prefer the two later works, especially The Snapper, which involves the relationship between the family patriarch, Jimmy Sr., and his 20-year-old daughter, Sharon after she becomes pregnant.

Cuilin Great books, I preferred the Snapper and the Van too. Hilarious 😂 4y
jewright I read his A Star Called Henry. 4y
The_Penniless_Author @jewright How was it? I don't know much about Roddy Doyle. This is the only thing of his I've ever read. I'm not even sure how or when it came into my possession. 😀 4y
jewright @The_Penniless_Author It was the funniest sad book I‘ve ever read. Henry is larger than life, literally and figuratively. It‘s set during the Irish Revolution. There‘s a sex scene with stamps that is burned into my memory. 😂 4y
The_Penniless_Author @jewright I think even that description will be burned into my memory 🤣 4y

#20series20days @andrew65 day 18 ( i think)
Another pulled from my shelves and i can picture where and when i read this and laughing out loud at The Van. Of course everyone thinks abt The commitments and the brill film but as a trilogy the bks now deserve a reread, altho i have also got 'The guts' sat in a tbr pile which is about jimmy rabbit 30 years on. Roddy doyle is a writer who i shd go back to as i loved a star called Henry 👇

andrew61 Which then became a series which i haven't read beyond bk1 and similarly paddy clarke ha haha i read when it won the booker and I shd read again. 4y

I loved this trilogy. The stories kept me captivated and the diction of the language felt real. It‘s set in Ireland so some of the slang was different but it was still a great read.

Some Doyle, a pint, a thousand versions of "Rocky Road to Dublin", perhaps a showing of "The Secret of Roan Inish" later - ideal St. Patrick's Day.
