The Warrior Heir
The Warrior Heir | Cinda Williams Chima
Before he knew about the Roses, 16-year-old Jack lived an unremarkable life in the small Ohio town of Trinity. Only the medicine he has to take daily and the thick scar above his heart set him apart from the other high-schoolers. Then one day Jack skips his medicine. Suddenly, he is stronger, fiercer, and more confident than ever before.

As expected, Chima‘s debut is not as polished as her more recent work. Despite occasionally clunky writing, however, Chima crafts an engaging story about an ancient magical society, unnoticed by no magical people, in which magicians fight proxy battles through warriors who engage in sanctioned tournaments…to the death. Jack has lived ignorant of his place in this society for 16 years & then one day everything changes. Fun read to end 2022.

I really enjoyed Chima‘s most recent book, Children of Ragnarok, and decided to start working through her backlist while I wait for the sequel. Starting with her debut—the writing is definitely not as polished (as you would expect) but so far the story is fun and I‘m enjoying it.

wordslinger42 I just read her book, The Demon King, and I'm really looking forward to the rest of her books! 2y
TracyReadsBooks @wordslinger42 That one‘s in my stack too! Definitely excited about reading more of her books. 2y

Jack is a normal teen, until the day he forgets to take his medicine. Soon his Aunt Linda arrives and he finds himself digging up a relative‘s grave in the dark looking for a special sword. When a stranger with special powers comes after him, Jack finds he has powers and is able to fight back. Little by little he finds out he must learn to harness his power in order to save his life.
Great story, terrible narrator

katy4peas There was background noise, you could hear the director yell “cut”, the narrator swallowed into the mic a lot, and he had pauses in weird places. Very disappointing for a Recorded Books version. They are usually a good quality and one of my go to audios that I know I will enjoy. I got through it as I liked the story, but ugh.. recommend paper! 5y
katy4peas Interesting characters too. I kept going back and forth: do I trust them or do I not? Are they good or bad? I correctly guessed a few twists but was surprised by just as many twists in the plot. Page turner for sure. On to book 2! 5y

The warrior heir like Chimas other books is a delicately crafted series of misfortune and trials of dangerous proportions. The story follows a boy named jack who was born a wizard but turned into a warrior. Due to the lack of warriors to fight for them in the wizards games the wizard guilds are after him and in a effort to escape capture and almost certain death jack has no choice left but to defend himself.

The story here is ok. I don't know why but I just can't get on with most YA fiction. I love middle grade but YA not so much. Still the story was ok. However the audiobook version was hands down the worst I think I've ever heard. The narrator was horrible. But the worst part was the editing. The narrator was constantly swallowing into the mic, breathing hard and you can even hear background noises like people talking and a cell phone!Skip the audio
