#readinggoals I have 3 of these on the go and for book club, my friend picked the two plays. Virginia Woolf will be a reread which is fine because it‘s great. I don‘t know anything about God of Carnage. These will probably be it for September. Some count for my ongoing #gilmoregirlsreadingchallenge and #aty2019 #selfimprovementsept

Wow, I literally suck. 😂 I read two whole books in August. (Read 10 in July!?!) At least they were both excellent. I did read the grownup version of Hidden Figures, I just liked the kiddie cover better. In my defense, I stepped in a hole some weeks ago and my injured foot has kept me from exercising which has limited my audiobook time. On a more positive note, I‘ll definitely finish Don Quixote in this month. 😬

rachelsbrittain It happens! At least you got through two good ones! 3mo

Old Man and the Sea | Ernest Hemingway
post image

I owe Hemingway an apology. I tried to read Old Man and the Sea 30 years ago and found it so dull I gave it up almost immediately. Ever since I‘ve thought of him as a crap writer but I gave this one another try and LOVED it. Such beautiful, spare sentences and such a powerful story about man‘s relationship with the rest of nature. I can‘t square Hemingway‘s respect for all life here with his love of bullfighting, though. 😡

SW-T Hmmm...I tried reading it a couple decades ago and hated it. Loved Hills Like White Elephants though. Perhaps I‘ll give this another try. Thanks for your post! 😊 5mo
GingerAntics I didn‘t know he had a love for bullfighting. That‘s interesting. I had to read this book in 7th grade and couldn‘t stand it. The movie was only slightly less painful. I commend you for giving it another shot. 5mo
Hamlet Try “A Clean Well-Lighted Place.” He‘s best as a short story writer, I think. His understanding and feelings about bullfighting come out in The Sun Also Rises. 5mo
See All 6 Comments
Mindyrecycles @SW-T @Hamlet Thanks! I‘ve stacked both of those. @GingerAntics OMG 7th grade!? That is just cruel. Giving books one more chance is a thing I do occasionally, especially since I found Code Name Verity a bewildering chore and put it down only to have it chosen for my book club. For some reason I loved it to death on my second try. 5mo
Mindyrecycles Hemingway‘s NF book about bullfighting: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_in_the_Afternoon (edited) 5mo
GingerAntics 🤣😂🤣 that would probably be a good way to describe my 7th grade ELA teacher. She was so mad that all we thought of the book was that it was boring. She kept telling us we were throwing away an educational opportunity. 🙄 Because that‘s what most 7th graders think about. 🤣😂🤣 5mo
