The rabbi lashed out with his staff erasing the first letter - aleph - from the word on Golem's forehead. At this, emet - Truth -became met: Death.

1997 Caldecott Award Winning Book published in 1996. Golem by David Wisniewski is a retelling of a traditional Jewish legend about a rabbi who brings life to a clay giant to people protect his people. The story is a little grim to read with small children. The cut paper illustrations are truly a work of art.

What a beautiful and informative book set in Prague, Czech Republic in the year 1580. I don't know much about Cabala, the mystic branch of the Hebrew religion, but I'd like to learn more. #ReadingEurope @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

Caldecott and was written in 1996. This book is for older children because of the language and meaning behind it. The setting begins with the Jews being threatened and beginning to be in trouble. The rabbi went and created a soldier to protect the Jews from the others. Golem stopped the outsiders and kept the the Jews safe. After the emperor said that there wouldn't be anymore harm to the Jews, the rabbi sent Golem back to clay.
