I follow Katee Robert on TikTok, and I can‘t believe I haven‘t read her before! If you‘re looking for some good smut with a side of a thought-out plot, Robert‘s got your back! I am absolutely reading the rest of this series, and while I‘m not interested in her Dark Disney series, that also comes very highly recommended.

1. Either the black cats or the owl! I have two black cats already so…
2. I really like witchy romances, and they all happen around Halloween. Payback‘s a Witch was a recent fav.
3. Either yelling or eye covering, depending on the movie.
4. The Living Tombstone‘s remix of Spooky Scary Skeletons
5. The Halloween franchise! And the Fear Street trilogy. Both are comfort movies.

I don‘t read very fast these days, so only four books read in August! 3 books, 1 audiobook. The Shining was absolutely my least favorite, and The City of Dusk and Empire of Sand were by far my most favorite. I‘m only 60 pages into Babel and I can tell the hype is absolutely warranted; I‘m so glad I got my hands on a copy before everywhere sold out! I suspect September will also be slow, but I have a ton of books for spooky season!

I wanted to like this book, but the characters were flat, the language repetitive, and there was too little ‘talking to ghosts‘ that weren‘t Benji for my liking. The exploration of grief was really good, though, and the casual queerness in the side characters. 2 ⭐️

monalyisha I agree that I would‘ve liked more ghost communique! I could see this becoming a series, and that aspect being punched up a bit…but I don‘t actually think it will be one. 1mo
MsRadioSilence @monalyisha yeah, she set it up like most romance novels where we COULD get a sequel with the best friend/sister, but there wouldn‘t be that ghost element bc its been established how Florence is the only one who can see them 1mo
monalyisha Maybe the sequel could be from a new ghost‘s perspective? It could be reliving/retelling the great romance of the ghost‘s life — and finding closure with Florence. 1mo

For my first pride month read, I didn‘t actually realize this was as gay as it was, but it was super casual about it and I love that. It‘s heartfelt, beautiful stories with queer people that have nothing to do with them coming out, or anything like every other queer story there is. It‘s so refreshing. I love the tones and atmospheres of the stories too.

The plot was heavy on the character study and light on the murder mystery, which made it overall pretty boring. I wasn‘t a fan of the romances, especially when they, like the twist ending, come out of nowhere and don‘t make a whole lot of sense. A disappointing sequel to a great first book, despite the character cameos from Nate, Addy, Cooper, and Bronwyn.

Anouk is a very constant character, but the fact that she‘s 17 with three love interests in this book (and one that proposes TWICE) bothers me a little. I think the ‘bury your gays‘ trope is tired, and also fake in this sense so - why? Petra was the first trans representation I‘d ever seen in a ‘mainstream‘ book, and I love her to bits.

None of the characters are likable. I want to hit Lynnette with her truck. Hendrix‘s take on the bury your gays trope is infuriating, especially since this was written in 2021.
