The Liars of Mariposa Island
The Liars of Mariposa Island | Jennifer Mathieu
3 posts | 3 read | 5 to read
From the author of Moxie comes a stunning novel told in three voices about the lies families tell to survive. Every year, summer begins when the Callahans arrive on Mariposa Island. Thats when Elena Finney gets to escape her unstable, controlling mother by babysitting for their two children. And the summer of 1986 promises to be extra special when she meets J.C., the new boy in town, whose kisses make Elena feel like shes been transported to a new world. Joaquin Finney cant imagine why anyone would want to come to Mariposa Island. He just graduated from high school and dreams about going to California to find his father and escape his mothers manipulation. The Liars of Mariposa Island follows siblings Elena and Joaquin, with flashbacks to their mother's experience as a teenage refugee fleeing the Cuban revolution. Jennifer Mathieus multilayered novel explores the nature of secrets, lies, and fierce, destructive love.

⭐⭐⭐1/2
Not my favorite from Jennifer Mathieu, but it's ok.. As always, good writing and the author created characters that felt real (and I love the 80s setting!)

And with this last book of February, I've got my first Bingo of the year!!! 🎉📚🎉🥳 #bookspinBingo @TheAromaofBooks

Reading Envy Podcast Episode 201: Wrestling with Complexity with Elizabeth and Laurie.

We chat about books we've read and liked lately, from memoirs to fantasy to YA to poetry. I'd love to hear feedback on the three-person episodes; there will be a few before the end of the year.

Lindy When Elizabeth said she taught Naomi Shihab Nye, it reminded me of the time someone struck up a conversation with me at a bus stop. I was reading poetry by Gregory Schofield and she asked if I taught him. Not being a teacher, I didn‘t realize that her question was actually about whether I taught his work to my (nonexistent) students. I was very confused. 4y
Lindy Also, I must have been hearing murmurs from the Reading Envy pub, because I‘m currently 1/3 into Eat a Peach and Molly Wizenberg is already downloaded for next. 4y
ReadingEnvy @Lindy hmm bus stop guy must have misread librarian vibe as teacher vibe 4y
ReadingEnvy @Lindy I await your thoughts! 4y

I think the international title is much shorter and snappier. #currentlyreading #septrso2019 #preview #digital #contemporary #angst #siblings #familydrama
