If you want a headache, read this book. If you want to fall asleep, read this book. If you want to daydream while looking like you‘re reading, read this book. Also, “combs” is one of his favorite words, so if you like combs...

There were some really charming poems in this book that I really enjoyed, but there were also a few overly convoluted poems that I couldn't appreciate the way I wanted to. Over all quite an enjoyable read, but I'm glad it wasn't longer 😊💙

Poetry book by Gerard Manley Hopkins. I collect this Penguin Black Classics, currently owning book 01 - 07. Anyone else collect it? 😄

My 2nd time attempting this poetry collection, and I just don't enjoy reading it, silently or aloud.

AmyG So, this picture was the best part of this book. ;) 7y
Brie @AmyG Ha, yeah it is a pretty picture. I found it online while searching for the book. 7y

I thought I could make it through this book of poetry because it was short, but no. A few lines about nature were beautiful. I recognize the pioneering stylistic choices of Hopkins, but his religious poetry is just not for me.

LectricSheep Did you try reading it out loud? That makes all the difference for me with Hopkins. 😁 7y
Brie @LectricSheep I did not, though that idea briefly flashed through my mind. Thanks for the suggestion, I might go back and try that trick in the future since there really were some nice lines. 7y

I'm not sold on the entirety of this collection but some of it is so so stunning, especially some of the sonnets and the journal entries later on. I think I will revisit the poems to see if they grow on me as his style took some getting used to but in the end I enjoyed this a lot

Second little black book read...a collection of poems mostly written about nature. Sorry Mr Hopkins but your style is not for me. Had to skim through a lot of this one 👎🏼

Twocougs I had the same feeling about that. 8y
Whatshereadnext I rarely bail on books but I was yawning through this one! 8y

Sorry Mr Hopkins but your book bored me to death. The poems were hard to understand and the religious angle wasn't really my thing. Meanwhile the second half's musings on plant life was somehow worse.
