This book covers Lister's life in the 1830s when she met and got to know Ann Walker. This account firmly identifies Lister as a butch lesbian but doesn't mention other options. A weird lack of attention to complexity. If you're not going to add anything and historicize, just print the diaries/letters. There's room for Lister to be an important historical figure for trans people and cis queer women, but this book is not interested in that.

A mixture of narration and diary entries of Anne Lister. It's not a whole biography, but mainly focuses on the relationship between Anne and Ann. In between one reads about Annes daily life, the society she's living in, and her working life. I didn't learn as much as I'd have liked to about being queer during her time, and I've missed some other topics as well, but all in all an ok read.

Anne Lister is a 19th century lesbian who managed an estate, wooed women, eschewed restrictive clothing, and kept a detailed journal. This historical account includes many excerpts from recently transcribed and decoded journals and letters. I took great joy in the euphemisms in particular. The author does not shy away from Anne's less positive traits such as merciless tenants dealings and interest in eugenics, but celebrates her achievements.

I loved the TV series and was already interested in Anne Lister, so I can't wait to finish this. I started it on holiday and it's really interesting and accessible so far.
