Star Colony
Star Colony | Keith Laumer
2 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
Coming in fast and low, the huge ship made planetfall. Three years out from Terra, the colony ship _Omega_ had reached her destination, and the crew began to off-load the cargo and passengers.
Then the ship vanished.
Against the vast panorama of an unexplored universe, science fiction master Keither Laumer sets this first volume of the history of the world called Colmar--mankind's first venture among the stars.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

I picked this up because I wanted to read something new, but not something so deep or fascinating that I felt bad for reading it while my brain wasn't working so well. SF beach fare, I guess -- something where I wouldn't feel bad if I kept glazing over at a paragraph. Anyway, this worked out well for that.

(oh, right -- #scifi )

TalecArashi The cover quote compares it to old pulp SF and -- while I haven't read much old pulp SF -- I suspect it checks out. To me this means regular shots of “Who talks like that??“ and “Who *reacts* like that???“, & worldbuilding that is more interesting than the dialogue or characters. :B

The aliens are cool (non-mammalian!), and the multitude of prefaces are in themselves very neat pieces of worldbuilding.

TalecArashi Just finished the two “Appendix“ chapters that end the book. The first one is... kinda bad. The second one is actually good though, as good throughout as any single high point from the main story, imo. 6y
RaimeyGallant Nice review. :) And welcome to Litsy! #LitsyWelcomeWagon Some of us put together Litsy tips to help new Littens navigate the site. It's the link in my bio on my page in case you need it. Or if you prefer how-to videos, @chelleo put some together at the link in her bio. @LitsyWelcomeWagon 6y
