The Husband and I are fully vaccinated, and The Kid is so used to wearing a mask that nothing phases him (he‘s 10, so no Fauci Ouchie yet). We decided to do a week-long trip to Scottsdale—just the three of us. Of course: I‘ve packed books. Up first: Obviously by Akilah Hughes. And, OBVIOUSLY, I‘m enjoying it with a few beverages. This was a fun essay collection. Some of it is funny and some more serious. I mostly know Akilah Hughes as co host of the What a Day podcast so it was nice to learn more about her. I read this for the PopSugar Challenge prompt of a book by a YouTube/Instagram person bc at the time of this book she considered herself an “internet person”

More entertaining in some spots than others. Overall a decent memoir. Covered a wide range of subjects, including how Akilah grew up and got her start on YouTube. Tales of job interviews, roommates, bus travel, dating apps, dating, fashion tips, acne, and health scares.

This book is fine. Which is a bummer. I really like Akilah Hughes. I enjoy when she is on pods and I follow her on Twitter.
Not everyone needs an aubiography. I really wish she would have gotten a stand-up special instead.

4🌟In this collection of personal essays Hughes draws from her childhood, elementary school days to college and into adulthood. She touches on big issues like racism, bodyweight, family, illness, friendship, celebrities, the internet and more!
I particularly enjoyed the parts about her childhood and where she hit on tougher subject matter.
Reading her writing felt very casual, as if we were old friends. She's funny and fresh. Out September 24th!!

What do you do when there‘s a heatwave and you can‘t even bat your eyelids without breaking into a sweat? Try and find a cool spot for a long day of reading. 

I strongly recommend this for teenage readers. If you need to take a break from studying, something to read between classes, or on your commute this is a good choice. 

Trigger warning - there is a chapter dedicated to her eating disorder in the ARC.

Next month I get to be on a panel with Akilah Hughes for the SLJ TeenLive Virtual Summit, so this is totally me doing my homework. Doesn't feel like homework, though. ?

Also, I just read the Disney chapter and I'm a little worried that the first thing I say to Akilah Hughes is going to be "OMG, I did my WDWCP in Tomorrowland, too! And I did a character audition and got a callback (Ariel) and also ultimately got rejected, too!"

I said I wasn‘t going to buy any more books but then the New York Public Library had it‘s first Lit Fest at the Schomburg so that was that....😬 #zeroregrets #blacklitsy
